I understand totally. We’ve never had 2 dogs at the same until about a year ago. A few years ago we found a female stray cat that we didn’t realize she was pregnant until we brought her to vet to get fixed. Anyway she had kittens and the wife interviewed prospective “parents” (I just shook my head) make a long story short for about a month the moma cat would walk around looking for kittens

Thanks for the experiences guys appreciate it... He sort of a neurotic dog with quirky ways at times. Hoping he snaps out of it... We've been giving him Benadryl to help him sleep at night...

As far as getting another dog, we're not ready for that yet...

In my experience 2-3 weeks to begin acting normal. The dog will eat long before that. I always ended up replacing the other dog. It will take time for the remaining dog to get use to the new pet. Luckily not more than a week.

I know it’s early but I have one male lab puppy left from a litter born Jan 3. Excellent bloodline. Great price. Sorry for your loss. I had to put our standard wire haired dachshund down in September. I ran over him. Still not over that.

dogs are very social creatures just like us... when someone goes missing from their life, they have an adjustment process to go through just like we do. I have seen dogs change permanently after losing one of their pack. All you can do is to either get another dog to fill the spot or give your pup some extra attention yourself.

Thanks for the offer, but we're not ready for another dog just yet... Hopefully, he'll get through his adjustment and start eating again..

I think that getting another dog helps tremendously but I also understand why some people don't.

Good luck

nuked my 16YO rescue mutt two weeks ago. my 15YO rescue was depressed for a few days. Got over it.

Probably will have to put her down this weekend too tho. Hips are going out and she is struggling to walk/shite/pee.

They'll even "pick up" each others poop.

I don't think there's a good way for your dog to die. Do I just get home one day and his lifeless corpse is on the floor? Just goes missing? Gets hit by a car? All sound terrible.

Had to put my lab, of 14 years, down monday,

Why did you have to do that?

Well he misses her and didn’t see her die, so that’s natural. I would guess pack members normally are present for each other’s deaths.

We had similar concerns with our 7-year-dog when we put our 14-year-dog down in August. After a couple of weeks, it was obvious he was lonely, and we started to look for another dog. But over time, he seems to have enjoyed being an only dog with more attention and more opportunities to go places.

I’d recommend giving it a little time to see if your other dog gets out of their funk. I had a concern that introducing another dog, with a completely different personality, could cause more harm than good. It’s a difficult decision.

I have a 1 yr old male German Shepherd who’s active alpha, and a 10 ye old beta female lab. All they do is either ignore each other or when they do interact it’s to aggravate each other which leads to growling/fighting.
I have a feeling when she goes, he won’t give 2 shits.

She was deaf, getting cataracts, and she was having trouble standing up from a laying position. Could only walk about 10 feet wouthout heavy panting, and she was also full of tumors...

The vet also thought she had k9 dimentia, where I often found her just staring at the wall.... She has trouble controlling her bowels, and was also the the human age of 88...

It was tough putting her down because she was a great dog, retriever, and was with my wife and I before we had kids..

We had two labs, brother and sister from birth. Female got cancer and we had to put her down in November.

Her brother was completely lost, and wouldn't eat. Had him at the vet multiple times, couldn't find anything wrong with him, and he died in January, 7 weeks after she died.

Vet found no health issue with him. He literally grieved himself to death.

Man there are some sick bastards in this thread. Serial killers usually start off by torturing animals.
