Dog Owners who had to put their dogs down...

and have another dog in the house....
Had to put my lab, of 14 years, down monday, and our other lab, who's 12, is freaking out... He's constantly looking for her and has not been eating.
Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced this, and how long did the dog take to realize this his new norm and get back to being himself again..?
I hunted with that dog a good 10 years, and Monday was one of the saddest days of my life...

scared this will happen soon. we have a female thats 8 and a male thats 3. he LOVES the female and hates doing anything without her. if we leave her outside he sits at the door until we let her in. don't know how hes gonna take it when the time comes

I had a dachshund that was already about six when we got our lab. They were together for about four years before we had to put the dachshund down. Lab acted a little strange/withdrawn for about a week, then was back to normal. She never stopped eating.

You have to talk to him. Let him know she's in a better place and all part of God's plan. He'll eat some casserole or from the KFC buckets soon enough. Let him grieve.

So sorry for your loss. I have a 17-year-old and a 14-year-old, Rat Terriers. They're going strong right now but their meds run about $250/month.

My Belgian Malinois died (found him dead one a.m.) when my Border Collie was about a year old. The BC loved the Malinois. I wrapped the Malinois in his favorite blanket and buried him.
The Border Collie would dig down to the blanket, and lay on the blanket. And, she was very very adamant about doing it repeatedly. I finally how to put a mount of heavy outdoor furniture on the grave.
It was heartbreaking to see the dog missing her buddy.

I think it depends on the dog, some are ok within a week or 2 & others will not do well without a companion.

Is he watching the food dish? Sometimes they leave food hoping the other dog will come back for it.

I have 12yr old Rat Terrier with diabetes and Cushings Disease.Her meds also run about $250 mo. I have to give her an insulin shot twice a day. Nonetheless, she's a great dog.

We ended up with another dog that lived in our backyard with our dog. We got an older Rottweiler. They both were bums with each other. It seemed like they ignored each other and just tolerated each other for four years. We moved into another house that did not have a fence so we kept the dogs at our old house. We would feed them once a day and they would both greet us but no barking and not over excited to see us. Well, the old Rottweiler died and the next day we went to feed our old dog who was now alone. He was running in circles, crying, barking up a storm like he has not seen us in forever. I have never seen him act like that before. Apparently, the old Rott was way more of a companion than we ever could have known. We packed him up that night and he became an indoor dog at our new home. We started a completely new norm for him and he adjusted.

Had a relative that had to put their 15yo dog down due to her biting people randomly and not being able to control her bowels. Smaller dog in the residence stopped eating, would hide, etc. They went and bought two smaller dogs around the same age.
Older dog perked up for a little bit, passed away a few months later. The daughter found him near the mantle during Christmas
