Do you know anyone (spouse, kids, parents, cousins, friends, etc) that spent a good amount of time around the dog?
It'd be good to talk to someone that can share in the positive memories of your pet. Tell some silly stories. Reminisce about when you first got him and what it took to get him used to his new home. Those kind of things.
Then like any grieving period, just give it time. I do suggest cleaning up your pet's stuff within the next few days if not immediately. Don't let his toys/bones/bowls be out. You'll just find yourself being sad every time you come home.
Probably take a few weeks to a month or so, but by then, you'll be ready to have a new pup in the house. I also like suggest getting a completely different breed unless you have specific uses for your pet. New breed really helps give you the sense of a totally new experience.

This. My wife wasn't happy that I stashed all the cat's stuff the day after he died, but it definitely helped. Although, the food bowl area still looks weird missing a bowl.

Damn. A dog dying is the worst. Its been 7 years since my boxer died and I still haven't gotten another.

Losing a dog you've had that long is never easy. I lost my first boyhood dog after 14 years this past summer. It's a strange sense of loss that is hard to explain.

It's hard, but you will cope. It takes time and it's best just to let it all out. Sorry for your loss. I've said goodbye to pets many times. Never gets easier, but I wouldn't change a thing.

Very difficult when you love your pet. Think happy thoughts about your time together.

Sorry for your loss, our dog died similarly in the middle of the night. It's hard but with time you'll only think of the good times and the pain will fade.
Go pick out his favorite spot in the yard and bury him with a nice stone to remember him.

If this is your response to a dog, life is going to be ruff.

Been there. It's a sad time. Get another puppy as soon as you can.
Dogs are really special.
I saw a handmade wooden sign in a souvenir shop in Jackson Hole, Wyoming that said, "Every dog owner thinks his dog is the best dog in the world. And every one of them is right."

Sorry about your loss, man. Lost my dog a month ago to two forms of cancer. It will get a little easier every day, but my wife still gets upset about once a week. Kids are pretty resilient.
I can't speak to getting a new puppy. Personally, I feel that the dog I have lost was so unique and fit our family like a glove, and that she's irreplaceable. Only you will know when it's the right time to reintroduce another dog.

The same way you do with a person. Have a wake with your family or friends. Talk about what you remember, tell funny stories. I garauntee you'll hear ones you haven't heard before.
It helps.

My dog passed away a month ago. The day after is really hard. I turned my focus to my other dog who had known her his entire life. Took the week off of work to just monitor him. He became depressed and just showed no sign of life. I had not planned on getting another dog but it was apparent he would just depress himself to death. So I looked at dogs all weekend and while I was debating between two...they both were being looked at by other people. As I waited for them to be done looking at both (and crossing my fingers they didn't take both) I walked by another dog I had not seen. Got her in a room, one on one and instantly knew she was the right dog. I was concerned my other dog would not accept her but they said to introduce them by having them meet on nuetral ground while having a walk. They couldn't have been more right he took to her about two weeks quicker than I expected. It's still not his girl but he has someone to spend time with while I am at work. Also I donated her remaining medicine to animal shelters and that gave me some peace. I am sorry for your loss and hope you get through the grieving process quickly.
