Does your town have a group of older men who get together every morning at the local diner

I've only lived in a couple of different towns in my life, but it seems like they have each had a group of elderly gentlemen who get together regularly to a little and shoot the bull.

I'm wondering if that is common, or if it is limited to only smaller towns. Or, maybe it is a southern thing?

I think if they sent some government type with a list of questions about how things should go to visit a different group of these guys every week, the world might run pretty smoothly. (Kinda like the old guy in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book, but with more than one old guy).

The old guy coffee clatch in my small town diner would shoot any government type that came around asking questions.

Yes, they gather at the local bait shop though. They sit in the back and drink coffee half the day. We call it the Dead Peckers Club.

The government considers those to be terrorist cells.

I was in Vernon Texas the other day and went to the small town coffee shop down town and shot the shite with those guys.
Every small Texas and Louisiana town has this.

There is a group I would see regularly. They have a good time, don't cause any trouble and the waitresses cut up with them.
Getting old doesn't have to suck and they refuse to go out quietly.

Local gas station here. They just sit and drink coffee. Every day.

Pretty much every small town in Arkansas I have spent a decent amount of time in has these. Well, the nice ones do anyway. Might be something to that.

My job requires a lot of road travel. I see these gatherings at just about every place that serves coffee all over the lower 48.

My small town does. 6 or 8 to a group. Dairy Queen, Whataburger, a cafe and I believe one at a larger convenience store that does breakfast and lunch counter service. Old man real time social media.

I'm sure there are some around Birmingham. Probably at a Jack's. My hometown growing up they met at a Hardee's.

The one in Old Metairie at Royal Blend includes former JP Sheriff Newell Normand. Or did as of 5 or so years ago.
Not a small town thing

I found a good lunch place while working on a job in Dothan, AL. There was a group of old codgers who ate there every day.
The sole topic of conversation was Alabama football. Every day!

There is a bench in downtown Northport where one of my best friends dad proclaimed it to be "the dead pecker bench".

Every town has a form of that.

The one in Nachez was at the local McDonald’s, at least pre-COVID.

They have several competing groups of old know-it-all men who do nothing but talk shite and complain.

No, but in the town where I was raised, and my dad still lives, old men sit every morning at the local NAPA store around the coffee pot and swap stories.
