You will get excellent optometry care at the VA.

Go back, and get refitted.

Some of these replies are the dumbest things I've read on the OT.

Instead of asking here, why not call their optical department?

And you can buy glasses without an Rx. But if you have a problem more than just needing to some readers from CVS, you go to an eye doctor. Just like if you have a problem that a hearing aid from Amazon can’t fix, you go to a doctor

don’t understand why we can’t just sit in front of an automated or manual lens selector and choose the best option for ourselves. Who’s going to ask ‘Which one- 1 or 2? 2 or 3? 2 or 4? 3 or 4? 3 or 5?’

The EU will happily let you buy contacts with nothing more than a few Euro, no scrip. While I'm not advocating people don't get their eyes checked, I can tell when my RX changes by .25 every 5-10 years.

Don't schedule appointments during the school year on weekends. You have a bunch of kids getting their first pairs of glasses and looking at 4,000 frames.

Why do you have a random "no" in your title? It reads fine without it.

If you don't measure your pupillary distance properly, the glasses are going to be a shitty experience.

Go to the eye doctor and get some real glasses.

A machine isn't going to check your eyes for high pressure, glaucoma, or problems like diabetic retinopathy, etc., etc. A machine also can't fine tune prescriptions for complex vision, or fit you for contact lenses. If you have a single vision prescription, stare at the red balloon, but there's a whole host of reasons to go to an actual eye doctor.

How about we be given the option to use a system without the optometrist? People are obviously doing it for readers without testing.

Just go buy a pair of low strength readers that work for you. I keep a pair of 1+ on my night stand for watching tv when in bed.

No one is forcing you to go to an optometrist; you're more than welcome to grab some cheap Chinese readers off the Walmart spinner rack. But if you take your vision and health seriously, you should go to a real eye doctor every year.

You have to go to their vision center for a prescription for nearsightedness prescriptions. They’re not cheap and readily available like reading glasses. Lol

I don’t need readers, that’s my point. I can’t see at distance. You can’t buy those lenses off the rack.

Then go to the eye doctor. You're not going to be able to just use some machine that spits out a prescription for you. My best advice, as someone who has worn glasses since the age of four, is to go to a reputable independent eyeglasses shop. I also collect eyeglasses, ones that are superior in quality to anything you'll find at Lenscrafters, Pearle Vision, Cohen Fashion Optical, etc. They are all part of Luxottica's huge network. Their service sucks, their quality and selection sucks, and their workmanship sucks. Any of them will charge you $400 and up for shitty glasses. They also own vision insurance, so they get you twice.

Which brands, please?

Id like to get away from the monopoly.

I like RE and MJ for sunglasses.

I assume RE stands for Randolph Engineering, and MJ is Maui Jim. Both of these are non Luxottica brands. Safilo group is probably their largest competitor.

I know Warby Parker is popular but I can't vouch for the quality of their products. Much of what they sell is made by the same Chinese manufacturers Luxottica uses. Better pricing, though.
Marcolin group is another manufacturer. I have a pair of Tom Ford's from them that I haven't put lenses in yet.

Personally, I have about eight pairs of glasses that I wear. Four of them are from a small French company I ordered from directly; you won't find their frames in the U.S. I'm down to two pairs of Matsuda frames after I sold two sets on Ebay. I'm wearing a pair from Lunor, a German company, although these frames were made in Japan. The other pair I've been wearing this week are vintage Oliver Peoples OP 5, pre-Luxottica, made in England. These are the frames that Ozzy wears. Like I told the other guy, find a true independent shop and just go in and see what they have.
