err...it's money driven. It's word of mouth.
If your kid has a parent willing to cough up $500 every couple weeks for tournaments, your kid just made the team.

We try out the moms first then we pick the kids based off of how their moms perform.

First step is to hit the streets and intersections in jerseys and buckets to collect funds for that AAU tournament in Orlando

$500 seems like the entry fee for the whole team, you talking about hotels and stuff?

Travel ball is for parents who never were anything, trying to live vicariously through their children.

It's pricey for sure, but make no mistake....generally speaking, the talent level of travel ball players is much higher than that of rec ball. Again, generally speaking.
So if you want your kid to compete with kids of similar skill level (assuming hes a good player), then you probably want him/her to play travel ball.

My girl's 8-10 year old travel soccer ball team is elite and invite only. You only have to pay a few thousand dollars to be invited, but you get the luxury of also paying for travel between 4 states every weekend....you know....because there aren't enough girls in Houston to get a girls soccer game together.

Does apply to any sport or just baseball? Because my daughter is in dancing and ballet.

If its an "Academy"( term used lightly) they will hold tryouts for the differing teams.. If they have muliple teams in an age range then the top team will usually be pretty much already determined.. They will go out and try to get people for that team, They will pull from lower teams if needed and ask kids to move down.. Occasionally some kid will come of the streets for tryouts and join the top team.
Leagues can be both.,, Some are draft, some are school, some are bring your own team and some are placement leagues.

Apparently they recruit also. We had a guy come up to us after a game at Healing Place and asked if my son wanted to play on his travel team.

A few weeks ago me and a few guys were going somewhere and one of the guys couldn't make it because he said his daughter was invited to play for a travel softball team, for the weekend, that she had been interested in playing with for awhile.
With that said, I never heard of tryouts for a travel league. A dude who use to have an office next to mine use to talk on the phone 80% of the day to people about his son's travel team and he was always talking about finding enough players for this tournament or that tournament so if the kid is decent, I am sure they can find a team to play on.

why do you always have to tell two stories about something you know nothing about?
