re: Does LSU not give a crap about smart, in-state high school students?

My son is a Senior and just interviewed for the presidential scholarship. He was notified he’s an alternate. The theme with all the parents at the event was all the other SEC schools had offered their kids big money and LSU had barely acknowledged them, until being invited to Scholar’s weekend. We all had felt basically ignored. We talked to an admissions guy at the event and they said they are willing to do anything to keep the talented in state students here, and they would be offering more money soon. But for most kids, it’s too late. My son is still deciding where to go, so not too late for them to offer us! Waiting on the top tier schools decisions on Thursday. He’s already gotten into other colleges that are very selective. Some people say because LSU really doesn’t have a competitor in state, I.e. Bama has Auburn , Ole Miss competes with MISS State, that they don’t feel like they have to offer big scholarships etc.. that they will get the students in state students they want because they are LSU.

Years ago almost everyone with a high functioning IQ went to LSU who lived in Louisiana, today very few Louisiana kids are choosing LSU. Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas, Florida, Virginia, SMU, etc. are dominating Louisiana's greatest export business.

I haven’t followed it in great detail, but I know as of three or four years ago LSU was def not offering much to local kids for some reason.
THis. My son is a high school senior. He really didn't start getting attention from LSU until this year. Even then, all LSU worries about for in state students is TOPS. They (LSU) don't seem to spend their monies on in-state kids.

What’s yon 10th-graders forty time?
Posted on 3/25/24 at 12:46 pm to DrrTiger
They 100% do not.
LSU assumes in-state kids are in the bag and that TOPS is all they need to offer to get them.
LSU only cares about chasing grant money and the metrics used in rankings for colleges. Those metrics usually value out of state students and foreign students far more than they do in-state students, and the more “diverse” the better.

Not even close. LSU used to let residents in with a 15 on the ACT. LSU wasn't on the radar for 90% of my graduating class. Out of 83 in my class only two went to LSU. A lot more now go because of TOPS than used to go to LSU.

I graduated before TOPS, and I'd say more of my classmates that went on to college went to Southeastern.

Where you go to school doesn't really matter. Maybe if it's Harvard or MIT. Nobody gives a shite after you've been in the workforce a few years. I don't look at a resume and think "wow, this guy went to Florida".
Same.
This is wild, 72k 15 years after graduation?

If they’re trying to game the rankings, they’re not doing a good job of that based on the last one I saw.

If LSU wasn't on the radar, then SLU didn't even exist.

My 10th grader (straight As, all AP and Honors classes, etc.) took the ACT last summer and got a 34. Ever since, he’s been getting letters and e-mails pretty regularly from most of the SEC schools (especially Bama, Florida, Vandy, and MSU), several of the major schools in Texas, along with plenty of others. Despite having his scores sent to LSU, he hasn’t gotten the first thing from them.
This is another way we are losing our intelligent citizens to other states. The college students leave Louisiana for college and never return. I feel it is a huge issue and we should be keeping our best and brightest.

I mostly dicked off in high school. LSU was about the ceiling for me at the time

If you are LSU, would you rather local money or the out of staters who will pay a premium to hang out in the Quad

They are not because they’re morons.

My daughter had a 30 on her ACT, straight As for her entire high school career, captain of cheer, president of National Honor Society and French National Honor Society and much more. LSU Honor’s college rejected her when she applied senior year. It was the only university honors program that did not accept her and she had no idea why. It pissed her way off. . She went out of state. Scholarships and cheaper housing made it doable. She is graduating with honors in December and not going back to Louisiana. So no, I don’t think LSU gives a crap. And nor does the state. Sadly…

This is such ridiculous hyperbole you should be ashamed

BAMA gave my sister and I a ton of money. Looking back, I should have taken it. LSU just seems very behind, and that was well over a decade ago in my experience.

This is true but its also the reason those other schools are throwing big money at LA students
