Does it matter if you go to a public or private school?

Couple of my buddies and myself had this debate a while back.
I went to a 1a private (Catholic) school from Pre-K- 8th grade. Went to a public school for 9th grade, then went to a 3a private (Catholic) school for 10-12th.
The only major difference that I saw was that coaches cared and invested a whole lot more time at the private schools. The public school we had super talented kids quit or get arrested and come back after missing a month then go right back to starting.
School wise we all came to the conclusion its more about parenting than where you go to school. I’d probably be in the same situation i am know regardless if I finished public or private

I suppose it all depends on where you live.

South Louisiana. Public school was trash. I feel like my parents did a good job of raising me to work hard and care about school. I would have finished with a doctorate regardless of where I graduated high school

In MS the good private schools (emphasis on good, there are a lot of terrible ones) better prepare students for college because their curriculum is not handcuffed by state test standards. Public schools teach to a test.
I went to both public and private. Both will teach you math and how to write. The private school I went to much better prepared me for college than public school ever would have though.
I’ll also add the 5 core classes I took my senior year we’re taught by teachers that all had PhDs. They were retired from teaching public college or public school and just making money on top of their pension.

So in that case it would make quite a difference. I live in North Alabama. There are not many private schools in this area. In fact other than Montgomery and Mobile there are not many private schools in Alabama period. We moved to our hometown specifically because it has one of the top schools in the state. It’s a public school, city school to be specific and is ranked top 10 in the Birmingham metro area. If we didn’t have this option though I’d for sure have found a good private school for my kids.

Which one?
ETA: if it’s ranked that highly, it really doesn’t matter which one. It’s a good school. I’m just curious.
I went to a Bham metro public school K-12, then private for undergrad. Was in classes with kids from private high schools whose parents paid 15-30k a year. Realized organic chem is organic chem no matter where you are, so I went to a top 20 public med school. Most of my classmates there were from public universities. Then I matched into residency with folks from both upper echelon private med schools like Harvard and Duke as well as big state schools. IMhO it’s a wash regarding public vs private. You get out what you put in.

Depends on where you live.
And how you’re raised.
And what your character is.
And many other things.

I’d rather not say because the name of the school is the name of our hometown and I’d rather not have the OT knowing exactly where I live.

All things being equal, the private school kid is probably going to end up with a leg up.

Only altamont and Indian Springs are better than the “OTM” schools. But there’s not a big enough difference to justify the costs if you ask me.

Let’s start with this premise; Catholic schools are parochial schools and not the same as private schools. Parochial schools have so many religious exceptions that they don’t have to conform to state standards. Private schools are held to higher standards.

I mean... a shite school is a shite school, but I personally think a lot of it is what you put into it and parenting. My wife went to a public school. She's a doctor, a few of her high school friends are, others went to Stanford or Brown, and they're all successful. I don't get why $27,000/year Newman would be that much better than something like Mandeville High.

I went to a public school and my husband went to a private school. We both earned TOPS and so many other scholarships that we got paid to go to college. We both landed internships at the same major corporation and ended up working for said Corp through college(summers) and after graduation. We didn’t really meet and interact until almost ten years into our career, but we literally ended up with the exact same outcome.

Private school if cocaine is your drug of choice
Public school if you preferred skunk weed
Or maybe that was just the 80s

depends on the kid/depends on the private school. Some private schools suck and hand out As like they were candy; some are known for academics. Some kids do better in public vs private.
I look at it this way. I went to public school and made pretty much all As, in the gifted program all that shite. first year of college was rough and i just was not prepared because i never had to study in high school and never brought home a book.
After college more than one person told me that 1st year college was a breeze or even easier compared to the private school they went to. Mainly the writing - they write constantly so papers etc. were an absolute breeze.
Private school isn't gonna make a below average or average kid smart. There are parents who prefer public school because their kid will have a better GPA and won't struggle as hard - at least at the one we send our kids to.
All that said a determined kid with parents who give a shite will likely end up just fine in private or public school. Right or wrong i look at it as pay me now/pay me later - i'm paying for private school and banking on that turning into a scholarship down the road.
If it were a private school where he skated by and it was just a way to stay away from gross public schoolers there's little chance i'd pay for it.

There is one private school in my area. It does not have a good reputation. The majority of students are on the A honor roll, but they under perform when they transfer to public school. Also most of their graduates fail out of college.
The only reason this particular private school exists is segregation. You will never convince me that all private schools are better. Do your homework.

In 8th grade...when my dad was doing his community services at St. George...they used the exact same history book that Kenilworth used.
The difference is your peers and friends. And in life its who you know...not what you know.

It only matters if you are in the bottom 25% of schools where they don’t actually instruct you.
As long as the school is decent, public vs private vs homeschool is the same.
You are responsible for your own education and success/failures.
