I’d throw in Karen Carpenter. Her voice was amazing. Anorexia is no joke.

As far as power, I think the only one that does rival her is Celine Dion. (Wife and I had a recent discussion about this)

While this wont go well on the rant. The only female voices close to her are Franklin and Carey probably. Whitney was absolutely insane. Her star spangled banner brings tears to my eyes to this day. Just incredible.

I could listen to Eva Cassidy for a solid day.

Pure, strong and could sing a huge variety of styles...

She really is one of the strongest singers. Her voice was insanely powerful, and she had great control over it as well. Great vocalist who let drugs ruin her career and ultimately end her life extremely early.

Someone who could rival Whitney in terms of pure vocals is Gladys Knight. Go watch her National Anthem from this years Super Bowl. The fact that she's singing like that in her mid 70s is absolutely insane.

Bobby Brown

Myth. Bobby took a lot of the blame early kn because he always had a bad boy image while Whitney was seen as this innocent angel who could do no wrong. Truth is, both were drug users before their marriage, and once married their drug usage spiraled out of control.

Hard for me to judge. Nothing is more annoying than a black women screaming that gospel vibe. Lauryn Hill has a better voice, IMO.

The one that never seems to get enough credit is Lady Gaga.

Mahalia Jackson had more power and definitely more soul.

Only problem was she only did gospel.

Otherwise, she would have made all the r&b/pop singers/divas (Whitney, Aretha, Gladys, Tina, Mariah, Celine, Adele, Etta, Chaka, etc) sulk in inferiority.
