Driving through northern Arizona a few years ago, I stopped at Meteor Crater and the temp there was in the 40s with a very strong wind.

A half hour later I drove through a heavy snow a few miles outside of Flagstaff.

When I pulled into a hotel parking lot in Flagstaff it was about 65 degrees and sunny. I described the weather to the hotel clerk and he said it happened all the time around there.

People don’t realize the elevation differences on the Big Island of Hawaii. We stayed near the volcano national park once and it was in the 30’s with a chance of snow. Drove to the beach that morning from there where the temperature was in the 70’s. The two mountain peaks there are around 14,000 feet.

I was in Colorado Springs one time and they had a tornado warning one day and snow the next.

In the summer you can have 100 degrees in Napa, then go 20 miles west to SF and be a high of 58.

Yep. When we were in Denver, May a few yesrs ago, it was probably mid 70s. Two separate occasions that week....one droge into Rocky Mountain National Park....was in 30s and 40s in places. Thats to be expected with the elevation though. Also drove up to Cheyenne WY and stayed the night. Woke up to 3 ft of snow on the ground. Never seen anything like it.

I was in Paso Robles CA in late August a few years ago. It was 101 degrees when I left town and drove 30 miles to the coast. When I got out on the beach it was 68 degrees.

Parts of California have micro climates in the valleys. I was driving about an hour outside of SF years ago and went like 25 miles and the temp would swing 20-30 degrees. It was weird as hell.

One time it was sunny in the morning, rained in the afternoon, and then was sunny again in the evening.

It was 75 years ago January 22, 1943 when Spearfish, SD. set and still holds the record for fastest temperature change.

quote:

That day started out very cold in Spearfish, and at 7:30 am MST the temperature recorded was -4°F. At that time Chinook winds picked up speed and two minutes later at 7:32 am the temperature rose to +45° F. This was a 49° increase in just two minutes that is a record that still stands. Temperatures continued to rise and at 9:00 am the temperature reached +54° F. As the chinook winds died down and 27 minutes later the temperature dropped 58° F back to -4° F. The rapid temperature fluctuation that day caused glass windows to crack and instantly frosted car windows.

I drove a convertible from Palo Alto to SF one day and had to put the top up and turn on heat as I entered the City.

What's the saying? The coldest I've ever been is in SF in the summertime?

I botched it:
"The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Usually in the Bay Area, the forecasters will give at least 3 different forecasts. City, East Bay, South Bay. Even within SF itself you can have 30 degree swings in a few miles.

That’s just life in the Rockies or any other high mountains. Montana and Wyoming boasted the same thing.

It was very unusual for me. On an average day in the deep South, I'd have to drive for hundreds of miles for a 5+ degree temperature swing not accounting for rain, cloudiness etc.

I woke up to 0 degrees and a blizzard in Mammoth Mountain, CA. We barely made it out in time. Watched the sun set that day in Death Valley NP at a little less than 90 degrees. It was in May.

It’s weird when weather happens like that. I was deer hunting in Kansas. When I got in the stand it was upper seventies. A storm came through and the temp dropped into the mid twenties in 30-45 minutes.

Anywhere there are Chinook winds. They come rolling down the mountain causing giant temperature swings. Largest ever recorded caused temps to go from -54 to 49 in less than 24 hours. And the temperatures usually go back to baseline as soon as the Chinook winds are finished blowing through.

Some of the wind gusts can reach hurricane force, too.
