After many months of waiting with bated breath, those who purchased a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon are one step closer to getting the 840-hp beast in their garages.
Dodge announced Friday that the 2018 Demon has officially started shipping to dealerships. The car, which puts out 840 hp once you dump some race gas into it, is a drag-strip beast that just so happens to be street legal, albeit barely. It's not meant for the faint of heart, with a 2.3-second 0-to-60 time and the ability to break the 10-second barrier in the quarter mile.

the cost of entry is still rather steep. With a suggested retail price of $84,995

It will be interesting to see if/when someone can match the 9.65 1/4 and 2.3 0-60 in a stock car.
Those numbers are probably the most (perfect) condition-specific performance numbers from any car company in decades.

Car threads without pictures in the OP are more annoying than chick threads without pictures.

How much would it cost to buy a left over 2017 challenger and put mods on it to be 800 hp? I know it wouldn't cost an extra 45k+ to build one, but without warranty.

Was that the Demon or the Hellcat?

I applaud Dodge for making this, but isn’t it banned at official track events due to no rollcage?

There were som stupid cheap Hellcar leases out there for a while, like 5-600 a month. Lease one of those, put a pulley and turned and a few other cheap mods and make 900 hp for a couple years , return to stock and give it back lol

I can't wait for people to start posting pics of the banhammers the dragstrips are going to be handing out when people manage to break 10 seconds in a car without a roll cage or other racing safety equipment.
Yes, as it comes from the factory, the NHRA has banned it from sanctioned events. But pretty much EVERY car is banned from NHRA events as they come from the factory; they don't have the safety equipment required to pass tech inspection. You put the safety equipment on the Demon and you can enter the car all day long. Don't believe the load of bullshite the marketing critters at Dodge are selling you. There's nothing special about the stock Demon compared to the stock Taurus when it comes to not being able to run in NHRA sanctioned events. Now, once it's outfitted, the Demon will be able to post times that will qualify it to be on the track. The Taurus, probably not so much.
You can still run the car on dragstrips at non-sanctioned events (i.e. test and tune days) all you want, though, until you break 10 seconds with it. Then the specific car will essentially be listed as a race car by the NHRA and sanctioned tracks should ban the car from running until it has the proper safety equipment and can pass the tech inspection. Anyone wanting to drive it on a sanctioned track afterwards, though, would probably need a competition license to be allowed to run it.
EDIT: Worse than I thought. Apparently, NHRA requires roll bars at 11.49 seconds and roll cages at 10.99, so it kinda looks like the unmodified car will get the axe well before the 9.99 second territory where the chassis requires certification.

I also think it would be badass to have one without a passenger seat.

he got it right... 'bated' means reduced... as in you held your breath in anticipation.
When you see someone say "baited breath" they screwed up.

Options abound, many of which can be had for $1. You want removable rear seats? That'll be $1.

Most tracks will let you run unless you breach Section 4 on track. Then the little guy in the shack will send you home. For 08 and newer it is 9.99 @ 135. The majority of owners at the majority of tracks probably will never run 9s unless it is modified. I think the DA was like -1000 when they ran the 9.65 at Gainesville.

Car has to be completely stock and the track has to be NHrA and Not IHRa. I got booted at Gulfport for running 10.9 in my 15 Turbo S.
