KNOXVILLE, TN (WVLT/Gray News) – Weighed down with high medical bills, a doctor offered this prescription for an east Tennessee couple: get a divorce.

Angela and Randy Tindell don’t want to split up, but financially, it makes some sense. If they got a divorce, Angela Tindell could file for TennCare, the state’s Medicaid program, as an unemployed single parent.

Then, there would be state aid to pay for their son Jackson’s medical expenses. State lawmakers are considering a bill that would grant TennCare coverage to a greater number of children with disabilities.

It would mean parents could make more money and still qualify for coverage.

If I was a Tennessee taxpayer, I’d be making an appointment with this doctor.

No, it's a typical solution to our outrageous medical system. This is not unique or uncommon. Medical debt driven divorce is very common.

We should be punishing people for getting a divorce, not rewarding it.

Or, and this sounds crazy but hear me out, she could get a job and pay their bills.

For many families, it would be financially smarter if the two parents were divorced and co-habitated as opposed to legal marriage.

This is especially true if one spouse makes a lot more than the other spouse.

Benefits, taxes, etc.

All of the legal "benefits" of marriage can be handled with legal procedures and documents.

I kept telling my gay clients they really didn't want to get married. They learned the hard way.

Obviously this system should change, but to call it fraud is a bit much. Don't hate the player, hate the game.

What we shouldn't be doing is putting people into a position where a single routine medical event is completely unaffordable for all but the wealthiest of the wealthy, even with insurance, and they are forced to destitute themselves in order to qualify for basic public benefits.

I agree. But I don’t think divorce is the right route to take in this matter.

I wonder if the doctor is thrilled that the family went public with his advice.

This works with old people and nursing homes too. Old folks married 60 years can divorce in order to qualify for extra nursing home/health care benefits and remain cohabitants.

Matter of fact, there's nothing that says a "church marriage" has to be a legal binding matter. Can have a church wedding for the social/religious affects without getting a license from the state registering the couple as a single tax unit.

The government should just get out of marriage altogether.
