re: Do you tip on the entire check amount or the pre-tax check amount?

I think we should stop basing tip off the bill.
I can go to Longhorn and spend $100 on dinner with my wife and son. Great service. 20% tip.
I can go to Flemings and spend $200 on dinner with my wife and son. Good service. 20% tip.
Why should the server at Flemings deserve $40 while the better server at Longhorn only gets $20 solely based on the amount of the bill?
It's stupid.

It should be pre-tax. Sometimes I just do 20% off total, rounding down.
If you're a mid to crap level server, you're getting 15% to the penny of pre-tax.
If you're awesome, you're getting 20% of total, rounded up.

Because the server worked their way up the food chain to bigger and better quality.
Roughly speaking.

This.
Plus more for really good service.

Until they started putting the math on the check and I noticed it was pretax I always tipped on the total. Still do for the most part but not always. I usually divide by 10, multiply by 2 and round up to the next whole dollar amount but if service was better than average I will divide by 4 and round up to the next whole dollar. So a $4 tip on a $20 total for normal service and $5 for above average.

Surprised that tipping is still legal. It's absolutely the last place you can outwardly discriminate based on whatever criteria you feel like.
Can't believe that some social justice warriors haven't taken it out.

Same. I round up on a small check and up on a large one.

Total. But I also don’t tip a specific % so I guess it doesn’t matter.

Probable cause the service industry employs most of the working SJW’s.

I mean, you can do the exact same witht he pretax subtotal
I calculate if i'm doing a % off of the pre-tax number. I'll also routinely add more or less depending on the service/

Well, I don't go to a place where the service is terrible. Never had that experience. If so, I would still tip the minimum, and dont go back.

Interesting.
I do
$10 on $20
$10-$15 on $30
$20 on $40
$20 on $50
$20 on $60
$30 on $70
And so on. Obv changes if it’s a place we love with a server we know/love.
Theres no rhyme or reason, really.

Someone out here ruining the curve for the class. No wonder servers are expecing 30% + standard tip these days at your small/non fancy counter order places

I agree it’s stupid the way we tip in the USA. $2/person at the table for lunch and $5/person for dinner seems fair imo. If that waitress has five four tops for dinner she is easily at around $100/hour. Most people fail to realize tipping 20% of the bill ends up giving that server more per hour than most of the patrons make.

Overpaying for something can happen to poor or wealthy people. It's more about being smart than having money.

The OT will go to their grave talking about how rich they are...until there's a tipping thread.

On a $100 restaurant ticket, this only makes a difference of $2.
Are we really that frugal that $2 matters on a $100 item?
$100 restaurant ticket
20% is $20 tip
$100 restaurant ticket + roughly 10% tax = $110
20% of $110 is $22.00 tip
WE'RE TALKING TWO DOLLARS!!
