I’d never give my kids permission to drink underage but would turn a blind eye if they had their shite together otherwise, same as my parents did

In short, no.
We teach our children that there are a lot of other ways to have fun than to put poison in your body. We instill in them the idea that when you drink, you don't think. When they become adults and decide to drink, I'm not technically able to stop them legally. But we are not going to allow them or their friends to drink under our roof, age 15 or age 20.

I may be different here. But I dont have kids yet.
But when i do, i would like to drink seldom around them. Im not a huge drinker at all. I like nice drinks, but I hate getting drunk. So it is a must that my children absolutely never see their parents drunk, or drinking irresponsibly.
I wont allow my kids any drink, period. Until 18, after high school. At this time, I will allow them to, but will never actively encourage them to. Until theyre older, my mantra will be similar to them having sex. I prefer you dont do it, but if you must, just please be smart and dont do anything stupid.
As I said, im no parent yet. So idk. Maybe it will work, or maybe all my kids will turn into raging alcoholics.

It’s always better to teach them responsibility. If not, they are going to do it anyway and more dangerously.

Don't make alcohol taboo to them. Most of the people that I went to college with that partied the hardest were the people with overly strict parents.
This was me. In high school I was the straight A uptight kid. When I got
to college, I had my own vehicle, my own money and freedom. I got lucky and didn’t do anything too stupid, but I definitely partied my arse off. More so than my friends who were allowed to party in high school.

Second best thing that ever happened to me on this issue was my dad allowing me to drink a beer or two at th hunting camp. Dismissed all the aura about it. As I got older he was cool with me drinking a few.
Best thing that ever happened was my friends dad letting us drink at his house. He never questioned us or hassled us. Just let us do as we pleased- as long as we stayed at the house. We drank like idiots but never got hurt or a DWI, cause we had a place to party instead of driving around or from place to place doing it.

My kid is only 3 months so I may change my mind, but I intend to do the teach responsible drinking route. Will probably allow him to have a drink or two at home once he's 16 on holidays.
I am going to preach no drinking and driving for sure though, and give a few no questions asked nights where he can call me to pick him up without punishment.

I don't drink responsibly myself. So I'm not in a position to teach that.

One of my classmates from a strict religious family failed out of school freshman year because all he did was party. He was like a 3.8 student in HS.

Mostly you teach responsibility by modeling responsibility.

I think it really depends on the kid’s maturity level. There’s some kids at 21, hell even 25 who still have no business drinking.
The key to the parenting and drinking thing is making sure they know that under no circumstances is it ok to drink and drive, and if needed, someone will come pick them up.

My mom was an alcoholic, quit at 23. My adoptive father knew I would have those tendencies, never let me see him drink. I didn't drink till I was 21. I am all or nothing, no training woulda fixed that.

Congratulations on raising future alcoholics.

If you don’t teach them how to drink responsibly they will learn to drink irresponsibly

I remember drinking my first beer when just a little kid eating crabs with my family at a neighborhood café. I couldn't have been more than 6-7 yrs. old since my dad died when I was 8.
When in high school I had friends that would have "after game" parties at their house for a few of their friends and their dad always had Carling's Black Label beer in the fridge of his "man cave"---garage, where he also had a pool table. We'd drink a few beers, play pool and have a good time.
That said, I grew up in a time when it was legal to consume alcohol at age 18 and any bar would serve me with the proper ID.
Nothing wrong with letting the kids have a bit of beer or a light cocktail once in a while, and if they over indulge at home you get to keep an eye on them and let them suffer the consequences the next day.
However, in this day and age of overprotection by EVERYBODY, you'd likely wind up in jail for "Contributing to the delinquency of a minor" if you let them drink a few beers.

my parents were strict af about it. I would hide my drinking and was terrified to leave my car places in case they found out so it led me to drink and drive like a dumbass. I plan on telling my children that there will be no negative consequences other than a stern talking to if they wake me up at 2 am to pick their drunk asses up. If i catch them driving drunk it will be bad

It’s the same with sex. It’s naive to think that your children are not likely to engage in these activities.
You should give them your opinion on the proper time and place to do so but also inform them on how to do both things responsibly without dying of alcohol poisoning or having a teenage pregnancy or getting the herp.
