Do you think it is a good idea to teach your children to drink responsibly?

Or do you think you should keep them from trying alcohol until they are of the legal age?

If you think it is your responsibility to teach them to drink responsibly, then at what age should you introduce alcohol to them?

How did your parents approach this subject with you?

Don't make alcohol taboo to them. Most of the people that I went to college with that partied the hardest were the people with overly strict parents.

If you live in South Louisiana and have a child, your answer will probably be different pre child versus their high school years.

Also
“In a private home—it is not illegal for a person aged under 18 years to drink alcohol in a private residence.

Absolutely.

Always have a koozie on hand, and dab your lips with a napkin after each sip.

You have to give them choices and inform them of the effects and how to drink responsibly

my parents took a hands off approach as long as I wasn't drinking and driving. worked out well for me. I intend to take a similar approach with my daughters, but to add that they must always have an eye on their drink.

I think drinking responsibly comes with age. When I was 18 no amount of teaching would have kept me from going through about 12 Coors Lights anytime the baws got together.

It's different for each kid. I handled it the same way with both of my boys and got very different outcomes. The rebellious youngest is beginning to reel it in, though.

Good idea to teach responsibility. 17 and 20 year old. They’re going to drink so you might as well be open with them about it. Now, they are both open with me and they generally don’t hide shite. Hard and fast rule is NO driving with even a drop of alcohol and for my daughter, get your own drinks. Don’t let people buy you drinks and keep a close eye on your drink. Worked ok so far.

I was 12 or 13 when I first got drunk. Tell them if they are around alcohol and they decide to drink, dont be a dumbass. Don’t drink too much & don’t be an idiot and guzzle a bunch of alcohol, don’t drink & drive & be the responsible one.

My mother grew up in Europe where drinking is more acceptable and generally not abused and my dad didn’t really care and I was well behaved so they didn’t care if I drank as long as I acted responsibly.

A swallow or two at home is not an issue, but I think there is a fine line between being permissive and encouraging excess...which is totally unacceptable.

I think the most important aspect of it all is that they see you being totally responsible when drinking...i.e., never driving if you have had even a sip, always being respectful to those around you, etc.

My daughter is 7 and I let her smell my scotch and bourbon to see what she thinks it smells like. I never get totally wasted in front of my kids. I let them know it is for enjoyment and not to get trashed.

Me either. I drink sparingly now after 4 years of sobriety. Unfortunately this wasn't always my policy.

ME. I agree, teach them responsibility and that it's not taboo. I quit drinking and luckily never got into any trouble, but when I was drinking it was always way too much.

I have a framed picture of myself at 6 months old wearing blue jean overalls and a caterpillar trucker hat sitting in my dads lap drinking a Budweiser
