The real problem is MADD and the rest of the pearl clutchers think 21 is when they magically become adults and are then totally shocked when they go out and drink irresponsibly.

If only there was a tiered system where they could learn to drink say beer and wine before moving on to harder stuff- like the rest of the civilized world.

The US has one of the highest drinking ages in the world and still has huge problems with drunk drivers and alcohol related crime.

My parents didn't talk about booze and sex was completely never discussed. Didn't do either until I was responsible enough to engage in either behavior.

It is better to teach young adults to drink responsibly than make it taboo and let them go wild. Many people I know with kids around 16 introduce them to alcohol and try to teach them to know their limit and never get behind the wheel when they have been drinking. Typically 16 would be about the time and should only be done occasionally in the home under parent supervision. A glass of wine or beer with dinner or an alcoholic beverage at a gathering is okay.

You aren't teaching them to drink responsibly, you are teaching them to drink.

At 16, We would lurk in the tobacco plus gas station parking lot and look for scraggly looking people walking into store and we’d ask them to buy beer for us until one finally agreed.

I drank early but didn't have sex until my mid 20s. My parents never talked about either with me. It really does come down to each kid.

The role of the parent is to teach life lessons. I guess it comes down to how important teaching responsibility is to you.

I can't think of any of my childhood friends that have never drank liquor at some time. Yeah, some of them became alcoholics but most of them just drink socially, if at all.

I have no issue with kids I've raised having an occasional drink once in a while under the supervision of my wife and I to make sure they don't overdo it, and if they manage to sneak a few more than we allow and get drunk, then it's on them to deal with the consequences of the next day.

That is one of life's lessons that are learned the hard way and sometimes that is what it takes to make it stick in their heads.

I started drinking in high school. By the time I went to college I was over it for a little while. Which is good because the grades were great. All down hill after that. Took me 6 years to graduate.
