There was a much more civil society then. Vulgarity and disrespect were very rare - not tolerated. Up thru my teenage years there was one murder in the area - a town 15 miles away

The one horse town you lived in doesn't represent the society of the entire country.

Everyone remembers their childhood fondly(unless it was super shitty) because they were sheltered. You didn't have to deal with the societal and cultural issues of the day. Your parents, if they were worth a shite shielded you from it.

It was nice when we didn't have to fear for our lives at schools, theatres, work places. It was nice when you could say what you want and not worry about offending someone or getting sued. It was nice when gas stations would take care of their customers. And family time used to matter. Now all that matters is electronics. Parents don't parent anymore

When did this start? So you're telling me I'm pissing away valuable time with my family and it doesn't even matter anymore?

Goddammit! I'll bet this is Obama's fault, it is isn't it?

Like when they had monthly cold war drills because we thought the USSR was gonna nuke us any moment?

I'll give you this one

I don't worry about any of that stuff now; people are always far too enamored with the past.

I don't do that now, but then I'm not reactionary...or a woman.

I still do that. The difference, I'd guess, is what I tend to say is not so out there that a huge portion of our current society would feel the need to look at me like a moron for having said it. This reads like you want to say things which kind of sort of ought to be looked down on by folks. Reminds me of what occasionally happens to me as a middle aged white guy in Louisiana. Occasionally I'll have a white guy in general conversation start talking to me, and then out of the blue drop some vile racist comment about someone in front of me...you know...'cause I'm also white and will simply nod like it's ok. Nah...it isn't, actually.

Why? I'm perfectly capable of pumping my own gas...

And family time used to matter.

It matters in my house. Does it not matter in yours...? Did something happen that made this impossible for those to whom it matters?

Now all that matters is electronics.

See above...not in my house.

Only if you were a white, Protestant, straight male living in America. Wasn't much fun for anyone or anywhere else. shite, read a history book if you want to know what it was like to live back then. Hell, penicillin wasn't even invented for God's sake.

he 1980's were the pinnacle of society. A nice mix of modern conveniences, yet you could still let your kids roam around the neighborhood and leave your doors unlocked, and have a gun rack in your truck and drive it to school. I think things started going downhill in the mid-nineties.

Just about every type of crime was at a higher rate in the 80s than it is now.

I like modern conveniences, but people today mostly stink.

I think you'd notice the difference of your son dying of smallpox. That's always a swift kick in the balls no matter what time you live in. Fortunately, those are at a ridiculous all-time low.

Do you think it's a coincidence that old people have always thought things were better "back then?" It's amazing that we're still around after all these millenia of things getting continually worse.

You must be a straight, white, male. Bc those times could only be considered better for that demographic.

The culture then was much more refined. Today we are plagued with vulgar disrespect at every turn and have to accept it to show we are not 'haters.'
I'd trade today for the 50s so we could do all the good stuff over again - and get it right this time = prevent the civil rights movement from becoming hijacked by the DEMs as their vote-plantation.

This literally only applied to White Protestant Anglos. Irish or Italian? You'd not even be allowed in most of those places. Black? Could be murdered at will without prosecution to the perp.

People had to bust their asses doing manual labor 80 hours a week with no laws protecting them. Fathers died at 50. Women didn't give blowjobs. No thanks.
