BR schools are mostly segregated and pretty much all of the non magnet schools are terrible. I'm not putting my daughters in those schools. I'd have a for sale sign in my yard tomorrow if I couldn't afford private school.

The answer goes back to the 80s and forced bussing. The majority white schools were higher performing and nicer than the majority black schools.
The government changed the school districts so that the racial percentages would be more representative of the city as a whole rather than the surrounding areas of the school itself. Kids were sometimes bussed in from the opposite side of the city.
The white people moved to the suburbs or put their kids in private school.

I wasn’t aware of the history of public schools in LA, but I figured race was the big reason behind Louisiana’s unhealthy dependence on private schools.
That really sucks. I wish I had the answer to fix it and reverse that trend, and I don’t, but it really sucks that parents feel the need to send their kids to private school.
Seems to me going to private school has less to do with test scores and education and more to do with racism, which is very sad.

I think it has more to do with socioeconomic class than race although that probably was a factor too. People in well to do areas don't want their kids in school with kids from the ghettos of NBR

They weren't segregated before this change. They were representative of the surrounding area which is how it should be imo.

When my hometown was first integrated and they demanded bussing, the town promptly responded by no longer running a bus system.

I was in elementary school when ours desegregated. It really wasn't a big deal.
Most of the black kids were middle class at our school anyway.
