Only magnet for the entire school?

That's really great for BR. SMHS was a great magnet option back when I was in school, especially for those going into the engineering professions. Then the whole deseg case resolution fricked it all up starting 1996-1997 school year when BR school board got the idiotic idea to let the neighborhood thug kids go to SMHS as well. Thankfully I graduated in 1996 before the change. My brother was still a student there when the change happened. He said it was like night and day between his time there when it was all magnet to when it was a mixed group of kids. Fights there every week, many of the really amazing teachers there left, etc, etc.

I thought that ended with the deseg case resolution in 1996

They still gerrymander the school districts. BR non magnet schools are 90% black. Hence the St George movement. Most people fled to the burbs or went the private school route.

Catholic private. Public, even in the Mandeville school system is not an option I would consider.

I still wouldn't choose that if there was a good private option nearby. I'm choosing a better peer group in addition to the education.

Move to New Jersey and send your boys to Delbarton in Morristown. Amazing catholic school (7-12).

Regis in Manhattan is also top notch.

My time at SMHS...school was like 50/50 white/black ratio.


We all got along very well with one another. No racial tension at all(and this coming from a white girl that lived in a mostly black area in BR...trust me I paid attention to racial stuff and wasn't isolated from it). I think there was maybe ONE fight my entire 4 years there and it wasn't about anything racial at all. We were all just a bunch of nerdy kids trying to do the best we could in HS to get into a good college.


Just a shame they ruined a good school like that. That school saved me. Considering where I lived...my only other option for HS was iirc Glen Oaks. No way in hell my dad could have afforded tuition for private school. I know Belaire had the medical magnet program...but again...it was a mixed group of kids so it never seemed to be known as a "decent public school" like SMHS and BRHS were in BR.

That's right...Central was a EBR school. One of my friends left SMHS her junior year and because of all the education she had from magnet...was able to become a senior instead at Central HS(she lived in Central).

Central was better than BR schools because it was too far out to bus most kids. It's one of the better public school systems in the area now since they incorporated.
