For a holiday family dinner, my mom could say “lunch,” “dinner,” or “supper” interchangeably and I don’t know what time that means until the food is ready.

I remember long ago saying supper to someone in basic training and the drill sergeant overheard me. He said “It’s dinner”. “Supper is with Jesus and he would never invite a coonass to his table.”

Growing up in N La, this was the norm. We did pay for school lunches, but the word lunch was just used for school. Now it’s still dinner and supper with a little more lunch thrown in, depending to whom I am talking. Never use dinner for night meal unless a formal meal somewhere.
