My brother in law was found in his apartment last year on Easter Sunday. 41 years old and had been in and out of rehab/detox centers and also our house to try to get him straight. Wife and I still feel like we should have done more to help him quit. Pretty sure my wife still cries at least once a day when she thinks about him.

I thought once your liver started to harden that it was not reversible?

I take milk thistle daily to help with liver function. I was never an acholic but I still worry about all of the crap they put in foods nowadays. Sugar substitutes are bad for digestive health including your liver.

So rough. A few family members have died from alcohol poisoning.

I have a friend who is currently dying from it, and likely will. As others have said, it is very hard to help someone who will not help themselves.

Yes, my uncle.

He had his demons and they were aplenty. Dude had it made - was married to a successful dentist, had a kid, but she got tired of him staying at home getting fricked up all day.

He was living with my grandparents after he had a hip replacement, moved out when he recovered and they found him dead in his shithole apartment in New Orleans having drank himself to death.

"Tangerine" by Led Zeppelin was playing on his stereo on repeat, so if anyone is familiar with the lyrics of that song I think he was literally drowning his sorrows thinking of what he had lost.

Yup.

Grandfather did. Was always an afternoon drinker, mix one on the way home from the farm, take a pint of Old Charter to the deer stand in the afternoon. But he got to where it was nipping all day every day after he retired. Just slowly got sloppier and sloppier. Fell one day and was in a coma for a month. Got well enough to go home, but was not right mentally anymore. The whole deal was like a trigger for dementia and Parkinson’s at the same time. He died about 3 or 4 months later.

Wife’s mother died after years of alcoholism. My wife (fiance’ at the time) had done it all to try to help and finally just had to wash her hands of it. So they were estranged, but they found her on our wedding day. It was weird. My wife was like well okay, it’s sad and I’m not surprised, but we’re not calling this off. Personally, I’ve always wondered if it was suicide out of spite.

Wife’s aunt is headed down that path. Weird deal. Very well off, owns a lot of desirable real estate, but can’t quit. Been in rehab probably 6 times in 2 years. In rehab currently.

Know a guy that lives near me that can’t get sober long enough to get on a liver transplant list. Has a wife and 3 kids under 10.

Whats crazy is we talk about Fentenyl and all that noise but Alcohol is killing 3 million per year.

CDC claims more like 150K annually for alcohol and fentanyl around half that and growing at alarming rates.

Considering the number that consume alcohol compared to the fentanyl consumers the

noise
seems to be appropriate.

I was under the impression that once your liver had cirrhotic scarring it was permanent damage. I know the liver heals itself, but not that much lol. But about 6 months ago, my gastro told me I no longer have cirrhosis. I sure feel like any other healthy 31 year old, I have 0 symptoms now. It probably has to do with my age and diet/exorcise. I did a pretty strict keto diet for 2 years, and I feel like that helped some of it. I did lots of research about the effects of a ketogenic diet on the liver, and there seems to be some evidence to support that it could help.

Had a friend die on the toilet from cirrhosis. He was 35. Also had a friend die of heart attack from years of steroids abuse and three of fentanyl (two were brothers). They all went to SLU in the 1990s. Life is short folks. Be kind to your friends.

My friend from high school. A Marine with 2 deployments and had issues after. The medication he was on and alcohol doesn't mix and one night he really hit the bottle hard and disappeared. He was found the next day on the property. The high amount of alcohol and the medication killed him.

Unfortunately more than a few. A couple of young mothers with young children and several men in their early forties. I sometimes wonder if drugs were involved too. Families don't share much details. They just say alcohol. So unless they share an autopsy, alcohol poisoning is the culprit.

My brother sorta did that. Drank scotch everyday and killed his liver about 7 years ago. He was 20 years my senior.

There are plenty of physicians that have done the same. One could argue that physicians should know better.

Some people are just self destructive.

All on my dads side, grandfather, great uncle (hung himself)
great uncles son (hung himself), dad (stroke).

My daughter drinks/parties more than she should, can't get her to stop. I remind her of the family history constantly.

A friend of mine passed a couple years ago from it. One day he was vomiting blood and went to the ER. Doc said if you drink anymore, you will die. He was good for about a year. He even came to my house and drank non alcoholic Budweiser. Some shite in his life went south, he started drinking again and died in the ICU.
