The Fifth and 14th Amendments’ due process clauses protect every person within U.S. borders, regardless of immigration status.

When the economy collapsed in 08/09 and the big firm and corporate attorney landscape shifted dramatically, I once spent a short stint denying the hell out of PERM applications while waiting it out

Why do you do this

Short version of a long answer is that I believe in the value of our Founders that America is the city on the hill, and the land of opportunity and prosperity.

quote:

how is it not damaging to the country by keeping these people here who dont respect our laws?

Again short version of a long answer but it can be broken down into 2 separate issues.

I firmly believe in border security and the need to have an extremely tight border. I voted for Trump 3 times, and a big part of it was border security.

With that in mind, our immigration system is broken. It was designed in the 1960's with 1960's in mind. Any updates since then (like IIRIRA) never really addressed the core issues. In many ways the system encourages and rewards people for doing things the wrong way.

So for me, the Honduran who snuck in 20 years ago to work and make a life for himself isn't a problem, he's doing what we claim Americans should do and pull himself up by his boot straps and make his life better.

Now for people here mooching off of the system or committing crimes, I have no problem with those people being deported, I actually fully support it. I also just don't take clients like that.

My brother and his wife (no pics, Japanese national) hired an immigration lawyer to assist them with the green card application and process for her. It wasn’t cheap, but he told me it was worth every penny. Immigration lawyers don’t just help keep people from being deported, they also help people legally get status to stay and eventually citizenship.

I honestly had no idea this was a real specialty

The bread and butter of immigration law involves seasonal workers, nurses, doctors, and people who marry citizens. There is almost nothing that can be done for non-status immigrants who get caught.

Everyone, in this country, has an expectation of due process. Of course due process does not mean exactly what many think it means. It just means "being treated fairly, within the confines of the law".

They have whole arse “non-profits” that specifically help illegals avoid the legal system and set them up with free benefits. Whats worse is the people who work for these groups. It’s like a rescue shelter for them.

None really. DOL was so bureaucratic, backlogged and segmented that I assume they had better targets to bark at. They tried to hire us, and I think one or two went over to them or Ogletree, but most of us were just waiting out the recession for other firms.

Not only that, the legal immigration process is immensely complicated and expensive. Why wouldn't you hire someone with expertise to navigate that? My wife's cousin has a green card and it was worth the money to hire a lawyer to get him through the process.

Fwiw I know somebody who married a Mexican and helped pay to sponsor the “cousin” to come over here and it was really the wife’s husband from Mexico

We are all free to disagree, that's what makes this country great.

Don't get me wrong there are a ton of great people in this line of work, but there are a lot of shitty people that are straight up preying on people because they are vulnerable or just hate America and want to bring in large groups of people diametrically opposed to US values to fundamentally change it. I'm neither of those.

There was nothing dishonest in the OP. He admitted to having no knowledge. Ignorance =/= dishonestly.

You were not ignorant of this. That makes you dishonest.
