It's a zero sum game. The energy required to recycle plastics, paper, aluminum, etc. isn't free, it comes from coal and oil.
My choice is to either pollute the atmosphere with CO2 and the environment with wastes generated from the generation of electricity via recycling or pollute a landfill.
This is one of the myths I was referencing. Believing them is lazy.

Recycling aluminum cans saves 95 percent of the energy needed to make new cans from raw materials. Recycling steel and tin cans saves 60 to 74 percent; recycling paper saves about 60 percent; and recycling plastic and glass saves about one-third of the energy compared to making those products from virgin materials. In fact, the energy saved by recycling one glass bottle will operate a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.
Also keep in mind glass can be recycled indefinitely and the same pretty much goes for metal.

I view recycling as a duty. The problem now is that most recycling collection is unsorted and there are not enough purchasers for product. Sorting recycling after collection is labor intensive. Also, as an example of the tight market, Lafayette can’t find anyone to buy glass, so it is no longer part of the recycling program. The net of these factors is that much of the unsorted recycling material is being exported for processing. For much of it there’s no guarantee that it’s being recycled at all.
I never had a problem with sorting the recycling at home. That reduces post collection costs and makes a better product to market to recyclers.
I still do it according to the program rules, but I just don’t think we are doing it right.

I don't even have a recycling bin, and haven't seen a recycling truck come by in the six years I've lived at my house. Tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if they threw it all in the regular dump anyway

I recycled my city supplied recycling container. If they want me to recycle, I’m gonna need a check—until then IDGAF.

I recycle as much as I can. Hate seeing plastics just chucked out onto the ground.
Does it ultimately help? Yes. To what extent? I dunno. But I’ll keep doing it.

When I see a recyclist on the road I try to run him over

Ever since it’s been proven that the one bin recycling method results in the same amount of shite going into the land fills but just at a higher cost, I don’t stress it.

I would recycle if we had a good system like that of the Northwest and some other places I've been.
But New Orleans has zero ability to do something that organized so I don't stress it. It's just not a reasonable option here.

Because it does not matter. The world will end in less than 12 years.

I run over him twice. Reuse before recycle.

I recycle with some reluctance.
I've heard too many tales of all, or most, of the recyleable being dumped in land fill.
I expect recyle is a bigger fraud than cash for clunkers that the loony left has fausted on us.
Its just another effort to help low skilled folks have a job.

I care, but I’m not sure what actually happens with the stuff that should be recycled

I'll recycle metal. Everything else takes more energy to recycle than it takes to produce

I recycle all I can, but I don't honestly know how helpful it is.

I try to recycle but it becomes a pain. My grandkids will figure it out or their grandkids. Millennials gave up on Gen Xs recycling goals.

Look at India and. China. When they get their acts together, I'll feel bad about it.
I doubt throw trash from my vehicle or just throw it out to anywhere else but a trashcan to the curb.

let the market set the price of recycled materials and collect accordingly. if no one wants to pay than landfill
Posted on 9/7/19 at 10:25 pm to LSUneaux
I recycle everything I can. If they just throw it in a landfill that’s on them. I can’t not try to do better.

None. It's useless. The recycling capacity is nowhere near capable of handling the supply.
