You people with “workout buddies” that take the thing I want to do and sit on it for 30 minutes are the worst

Go to the ymca if you want to have “buddies”

I got a workout buddy. It helps with accountability for showing up. 5am workouts Mon Wed Friday. Sometimes we follow a program, sometimes we make shite up. Sometimes we accidentally coordinate our clothing and get smug remarks, but those are from bros with no workout buddy who are really just jealous.

Most other people are in there with no buddy.

The only reason I started working out is because of my buddy, and now we’re 3.5 years in, so I would say get a buddy!

I mean I love chatting about fitness & goals and stuff, but usually the actual gym time is when I just shut off my brain and listen to music/podcasts for a bit. If you need a spot just ask someone nearby. Now run club/cycling is different and a partner is a great addition.

As far as motivation, the "no pain no gain" mentality of the past is pretty outdated and can easily get people injured. Most people work out hard enough when they're at the gym, they're just not going to the gym consistently enough. Anecdotal but I have gotten significantly better results & significantly improved recovery by dropping my weight by 50%+ and doing slow, controlled reps with lots of time under tension

Weak minded people use crutches like ear pods and workout buddies. They lack internal fortitude to self motivate.

I have a training partner. Lifting your percentages by yourself is easy, put the weight on and lift it.

What’s hard is doing echo bike sprints or interval work by yourself. Having someone to chase or stay ahead of will definitely help you push the intensity

I leave my phone in truck. Have my corded buds plugged in to my IPOD MINI (yep u heard me) and do my own thing.I do stretching and core for an hour. 45 mins of pushes and pulls then I’m out. Works for me.

I do. 5am 4 days a week. Sometimes one of us bails but most of the time we workout together and it’s great. We follow same Pen Paper programs and lift around same weight. Both in our 40s, no ego lifting, just getting work done. He listens to his music and I listen to mine. After workout it’s sauna time and we catch up and chat then. It’s great

Have things changed around the gym from the old days? Everyone has ear pods in doing their own thing. No spotting, edging on, motivators, etc. everyone just staring at a phone during breaks in sets.

I workout on my lunch break and thats the last thing I want is someone talking to me. Airpods in and I lift and go back to work. I take my break from people talking to me in there.

My Daughter's pediatric dentist goes to the same gym I do at the same time, and she asks me for a spot and to work together on sets occasionally. Shes maybe like an OT 7.5... I don't mind helping out, but I know I have to tread carefully there or I might end up in a bad situation

Back in the day everyone had a workout buddy pushing each other to the brink.

You and your workout buddy walked into the gym like a WWF tag team. Everyone knew each other by a pairing. Heaven forbid you were seen in the gym getting a pump on without your workout buddy. Better be a damn good reason or drama would ensue.

I’m a 50yo man with a wife and kids. I don’t have buddies. Just friends I haven’t talked to in 8 years.

Started out going again for the first time in about 10 years, working out by myself. My son went to the Doc for a checkup. Told him he was underweight. Pissed him off. We started working out again. Ran into a couple guys working out. We made some new friends and started working out with them.

Had one guy that we learned a lot of new workouts from. Pushed us all to get stronger. He ended up leaving for another job. We all stuck together and meet around 6:15 every Mon-Thurs. We all hang out and watch football and fellowship.

So yes worked out by myself and enjoyed that but a group of like minded individuals working out can push each other and get great results.

Usually. Depends on the workout. HIIT or cardio? Yeah.
