re: Do you have a problem with police running red lights when NOT in pursuit?

SO you just aren't getting the nuance of the discussion. Whatever
I realize this is your shtick here, but keep in mind I'm not being a dick with you or the topic. If there's some nuance you think I'm missing, please feel free to explain it.

Well then you are advocating for some pretty ridiculous tickets to be written
I'm advocating for jettisoning traffic laws we all think are stupid or don't want enforced AND enforcing the ones completely we all expect to have. I'm advocating for LESS laws, but enforcing the laws we have completely. How is that some radically strange idea?

So you posting on company time?
Self employed working from home...so nah. Plus I've got a kid home with fricking pink eye today, so this may be the highlight of my day...

There wa sa lot more to your scenario than just officer involved
Was there? I wasn't being evasive...I guess I just worded it more vaguely the second time. All I intended to suggest by officer involved was precisely what I stated the first time, but with less words. I assumed you'd get that given I'd been more specific the first time.

I hold my police officers to higher standards... don't you?

Speak for yourself. I don't need a ticket for going 5 over on the highway or not using a signal.
Yeah, frick the law. I'm sure you're the type who likes to tailgate and drive like an a-hole on the interstate while bitching why our insurance rates are so high.

Who decides which ones are unnecessary?
Citizens who advocate for making changes and voting for legislators who feel the same way to make those changes. Did you huff paint in civics class?

ETA: And since you are such a stickler for following the letter of the law, I sure hope you aren't posting on company time.
Please tell me what law this breaks.

Sat behind one trying to turn left at a right only. Honked and pointed to the right when he looked in the rear view. Kept sitting. So I called the police station and told them I was sitting behind car #x trying to turn left in a right only and cars were backing up.
Nothing happened of course. But I felt better.

You've yet to demonstrate how he think he's above the law more so than anyone else that gets caught breaking a law.

On one hand, it is hypocrisy and each time I see, it erodes my confidence in the idea of "rule of law".
On the other hand, my clandestine surveillance network covering police forces don't always give me sufficient information to properly judge their behavior. Running red lights might be in their SOP; meaning that cop may've been doing his job correctly.
I enjoy judging other people as much as anyone, but it is important to have all relevant information available when assessing the correctness of behavior. If that cop is doing it out of laziness or against his agency's policy, then he should face appropriate action:
* not fired; I'm trying to be reasonable he still needs a job,
* he should have to sit through a boring-arse 2 hour safety-training course,
* required to pull a shift of some undesirable duty normally reserved for newer members,
* must help his department revise its vehicular safety regulations to make what he did less appealing to other members of his team.

Being a police officer is a shitty job with shitty pay. And most people hate you. Let them run a red light once in a while. Who cares

They should obey the same traffic laws as any citizen when not in pursuit.
I see them all the time going 80+, then pull off into a McDonalds.

Occasionally, you'll see them patrolling. They would stop at a red light, check to see if the coast is clear, then pull off.
You dont run with lights or sirens responding to non life threatening calls....but when responding to non life threatening calls you stop check for oncoming traffic and then proceed if clear.

Fine, just do that with your lights on. if you don't want to put your lights on, then follow the rules of the road like everyone else. Police cars have lights for a reason.

Police disobeying traffic laws really pisses me off. I remember when I was younger I was with a friend on the way back from duck hunting and a cop pulls us over for no seatbelts. Well the cop didn't have their seatbelt on either and we mentioned it to the guy. Then he threatens to give us a speeding ticket too and that we were going 4 mph over and if we didn't shut up we'd get that too. I generally always back cops when people shite on them for how they act in very dangerous situations where their lives are at stake but a traffic cop is generally a POS

Wrong....lights signal for all vehicles to stop and yield to you.
You are not stopping the vehicles....you are only proceeding through tragic control while still yielding to traffic that has the right of way..

I'm reaching here, but what about theft by fraud? It could be argued you're billing the company for services that you did not perform.

Same way he could tell we weren't wearing one? We saw it. How stupid of a question is that?

Why?
I'm not asking if they are or are not following procedure...I'm asking WHY that seems to be procedure?
Earlier in the thread we had guys suggesting that lights/sirens actually made it take longer to get where they were going, which does not stand to reason if you're saying they only go on for life threatening situations.
Why not, for the safety of themselves (the thing we seem to hear the most about in regards to police) and for those poor souls having to drive on the same roads as them, put the lights and sirens on to help citizens know what's coming and get out of the way...?

Just wondering since I don't typically drive around looking at other people's seatbelt wearing habits

I wanted the guy that hit his lights and siren 2 seconds before blowing through a red at 40mph to get t boned by a semi.
Wasn't far from causing a helluva accident with a minivan.
Saw it outside my shop yesterday. frick that guy.
eta-Wasn't in pursuit of anyone.
