Do you ever have to break it to someone that life isn't fair?
There's been some things happen in our office that aren't exactly equal among the employees (mostly regarding raises and their timing) and a couple of people are being quite vocal and annoying about how "it isn't fair". I will say that I am in the same boat as that group but thankfully my dad and grandpa raised me from a very young age that anyone whoever tried to tell me life was fair was doing me a great disservice. Sometimes I catch myself about to say it about something that's bothering me but then I realize that sometimes, things just aren't fair, and I move on and I feel like it's in general made me a much happier person. Sometimes life breaks a different way and you just need to keep working harder and eventually it will break in your favor and against someone else. But wringing your hands and complaining to the world does nothing. I'll probably have kids within the next 5-10 years and this will be one of the lessons I try and put an emphasis on.

Tell them to quit bitching and get better at their jobs or to find a new one

One of the subordinates on my team recently complained that his manager wasn’t “outlining his promotions and career path well enough.”

I advised him: Dude, YOU are responsible for earning your promotion.

He was incredibly shook by my comment.

Maybe he wants to be the manager instead of the head fry chef like you. Clearly you don't know how to point him on that direction

Having a child with a disability is an example of life not being fair. You have no control over that.
If you don’t like how your employer treats you, buck the frick up and find a new employer. That’s controllable.

Having a disability isn't fair. (I know personally) Having a child with a disability is unfortunate.

You you realize your potential is capped out and come to terms that you don't deserve a raise?

This was a pretty dickish response to a reasonable question. Most companies give you an idea of your projected career path. Doesn’t sound like he was asking for a promotion.

Especially in this economy. If you don’t like your employer now is the time to get 10 to 15 percent raise at a new place.

Why do they know about raises other employees got?

no. But I don't scream it and grumble to my co workers about it. I deal directly with the people who make things happen.

ETA: I also said in my OP when things don't break your way, just work harder. Then they're things are more likely to in the future. Or alternatively as many have pointed out, find a new job if I get to the point where I feel like my services are very undervalued.

Because people have big mouths. Very unprofessional.
