This was a pretty dickish response to a reasonable question. Most companies give you an idea of your projected career path. Doesn’t sound like he was asking for a promotion.
Agree - promotion is one thing but career path is another. Most decent companies/supervisors will provide you with a career path. If they cant, then there is a problem. Working hard and following that path is on you. Unfortunately or fortunately, sometimes the path is out the door.

Some companies are dumb enough to send out billing emails and you can figure comp out that way.

There is usually a reason some people get raises and others don't. Life being fair has nothing do with it

Why do they know about raises other employees got?
Companies don't want employees talking about pay, but it is illegal for them to openly forbid it. Granted, they can just find another reason to get rid of you if they want to.

There are people here that get paid more than I do and work less and will complain about things to me. I typically just smile and nod.
I don’t let it bother me because my career will go much further than theirs.

I have kids so yeah.
This is the perfect answer. I've had the "pleasure" of breaking their hearts when explaining that there are no free rides, sometimes life isn't fair, you need to work for what you get to really appreciate it, you've got to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run and sometimes, no matter what you do, it's going to be wrong--------you get the drift.

anyone with kids has to do this on almost a daily basis.

Life is definitely not fair.I make it a point to make my grandkids watch the Shriners commercials on TV while they’re sitting on their butts playing video games on Nanny’s IPad.

I was one of those "why does this happen to me" types. I got tired of feeling that everything was stacked against me so I made a change to my life instead of hoping someone would change my path for me. I went back to school and got my degree, ended up staying at the same company and was promoted 3 times since my graduation. My salary has more than doubled in that time span. Now when I hear people complain about their life situation I tell them to do something about it, nobody is going to change it for you!

From an employee perspective it’s great to have people discuss their salary. It makes leveraging more much easier.

My company has cut a lot of jobs over the past 8 months. I'm often times the one who has to inform employees who are being let go. It never gets easier. I wasn't even sure about my job until last week when I received an offer to move overseas again.
