This is the honest truth. I’ve told my kids, you have to work your arse off on the front part of your career so you can take it easy on the back part.

I want to instill in my child a strong work ethic but also a strong work/life balance. You need to perform well when you're doing your job, and that will include proper preparation in off hours sometimes and sometimes going above and beyond what is normally asked of you, but you can't let work overtake your personal life.

That's how I handle work. Handle my shite and get work done in a timely manner, but I do that in effort to reclaim time for myself and my personal goals. I get paid for 40 hours but probably only usually work 30. Sometimes, though, I'll need to work 50 or more. Just depends.

I have had four dependents for twenty years that have never wanted for anything. Compared to most people , I think I grind pretty steadily and unselfishly day in and day out. But my Dad was a HOF hard worker-legendary in my eyes-so that has always made me feel lazy by comparison.

I have to say my dads work ethic really is reflected in me and my 2 brothers.

I am the middle child and I work my dick off. I’d be in the top 15ish%, probably close to 10% but my younger brother and my older brother are at the very top 2-3%. I work really hard and I’m probably more intelligent than them by a hair but they’ll work circles around me.

The most frightening and liberating thing about parenting is that you really don’t have that much control over traits like this. You can show her the value in it, but ultimately she’ll decide what type of work ethic she adopts.

Just lover her, love her mom (or at least be respectful of her if y’all aren’t together), be there for her and be the type of guy that you’d want her to marry one day. You do that and she’ll be fine.

Eh...I dunno. A large proportion of the 70-80 hour a week types that I’ve known were assholes who were in it for themselves and that was pretty much it. Also, some guys work those hours because they want nothing to do with their wife or kids (I knew a couple of those too).

I grind when I have to. End of year is usually a ball busting time, but I can’t complain most of the time. Over the last 3 years, I’ve learned to just stop doing things that don’t drive profitable revenue. I ignore most internal trainings and managerial requests outside forecasting. I firmly believe most employees of large corporations could accomplish the meat of their job in 15-25 hours per week.
