I only do it if the carton is well past the expiration date.

I recently had a carton 2 weeks past the expiration date, so I did the float test, and they were still good to use.

Aren’t we the only country in the world that refrigerates eggs? Now I gotta float test them too? Meanwhile it’s ok to put high fructose corn syrup and half the country is diabetic, but yeah let’s get crazy cautious about a natural product.

Bad eggs do float but your husband doesn't need to check store bought eggs. They pretty much collect them the day they are laid. Now if they are coming from a farm, they could somehow get an older egg but highly unlikely.

Those are known as “witch eggs”.

And while we are on the subject-

Really hope we never have to write, "RIP The Boat, bad egg sank 'em !" here.

It only takes a second to put it in tall glass of water and see. Salmonella is like the Wu Tang Clan, fam.

ETA, we do refrigerate them, because we wash off the normal protection that's on them when laid. If they are farm, fresh, this isn't necessary, they will stay good for 6 months.

Do you bring them to him in bed every morning?

That’s the only important question

There's an air pocket in the end of the egg that gradually gets bigger as it ages. So, floating is definitely an indicator of an older egg, but not sure it necessarily means it's bad.

Yep, we don't go through eggs fast enough before the expiration date on the carton so I always check.

Who the hell takes the time to check their eggs? I can only remember one time where I cracked an egg only to discover that it was rotten, and I cook eggs every morning.
If you eat eggs every morning then odds are very low that you'd ever find a rotten one. If you eat them less often and they stay in the fridge for a while maybe you'd find more rotten ones.

This is what I was going to say. I’m not someone that eats like 2 dozen eggs a day, but my wife bakes and we cook so we go through eggs in 1-2 weeks usually at absolute most. I can’t imagine having eggs that are that bad. I’m sure I’ve cracked a bad egg, but I honestly can’t remember doing it.

Maybe bad eggs float but I’m not convinced a reasonable percentage of good eggs don’t float also if he is routinely finding ‘bad eggs’ that’s likely just not the case.

If you ever crack a rotten egg indoors you might change your opinion on this. Typically store bought eggs within the expiration date are ok but when we get local I always check them.
