Why would anyone leave their vehicle on while filling it with gasoline? If your family can’t sit in a vehicle 3 minutes with the engine off, they’ve got bigger problems.

All the fatties in this thread break out in the meat sweats if the air is off for a minute. America is soft.

Yes. I was told by my dad that it wasn’t a good idea to leave the car running when filling up and it stuck. Don’t know if true or not but who cares.

We need an official OT ruling in this thread so that it can be added just before the "paying for gas inside is trashy" statute in the OT Code of 2003.

I had a 2005 GMC Canyon that was a colossal piece of shite. I had to do the passlock re-learn procedure a few times per month so I never shut it off unless I was home or at work. That being said, I wouldn't recommend leaving your engine running while putting gas. They have signs telling you to shut your engine off for a reason.

Unless it's a combat turnaround, I won't do a hot refuel.

I like to leave the driver door open with the key on so I can head the door dinging non-stop for 3 or 4 minutes.

It really annoys my family.

Yes but only because I read that pumping gas can stir up whatever might be residing at the bottom of the gas tank and get in the engine

No. Leave it running and lock the doors.

I leave it running every time unless my wife is with me. She makes me turn it off. Otherwise, i leave it running.

It's a statistical anomaly that something will go wrong and the vapors will ignite. I've been slapped in the face by Murphy's law enough in my lifetime to not take my chances, so I always turn the ignition off. If 99.999% of fill ups with the engine running don't result in a fire, then I will be that 0.001%, I'd rather not take the chance. Other downsides is that gasoline engines were not intended to idle for long periods of time, carbon build up at lower RPMs is a real thing and can cause issues long-term. The EVAP system is also intended to be a closed system, which is why at times fueling a running vehicle will throw codes like the EVAP canister or the fuel cap, while most times the code will go away it can lead to premature failure of EVAP components. Open invitation for a car jacking, while not a high chance of occurring it's still a greater chance running than not running during fueling. It's illegal in some states and countries because it is effectively increasing pollution unnecessarily.

TL/DR other than convenience fueling a running vehicle provides risks, while not statistically probable, that can be easily mitigated by turning the engine off during the fueling. Why increase risks just because?

For the same reason they run it at all?

No. I put the pump in, then get back in the truck.
