Do restaurant waiters actually make decent money?

From what I understand they make $2-3/hour + tips. Seems like whenever I go to a restaurant though they are serving 5-6 tables an hour or more.
If the average tip is only $3 (low end) they still should be making $15-$20/hour right?
Any former waiters weigh in on this?

Depends on the restaurant. I don't think a waiter a Chili's does very well. After all of the drugs they are usually in debt.

I did fairly well working at the busiest restaurant in Baton Rouge. It wasn't uncommon to walk out with $200-$300 a night depending on the shift. Once I graduated college and got my first "real job" I was making less money.

You ever been to a nice restaurant? A place where the appetizer was like a 45 cheese plate? with 2 types of exotic cheeses? and for 65 you could get 2 additional types of cheeses?

I worked in the kitchen at a decent BR restaurant about 10 years ago and waitresses were making $300+ every Friday and Saturday night. Even lunch shifts during the week were getting $100-$200 every day.

I made at least $100 a shift during the week at Jones Creek Cafe. More than that on the weekends. It was a nice second job.

my friends worked at applebees out of high school. they did very well, esp on weekends

A career waiter at Emerils or Restaurant August probably does pretty good.
A whole lot of in between that probably works three or four nights a week at average place making money on weekends. No benefits for most of them.
Couldn't pay me enough to deal with the general public in a restaurant. You can see from what kind of responses you get on the OT about tipping to know what kind of shite you have to put up with.

If they work in shitty restaurants, then not really. But if they keep up their game and move into higher class spots, I think they do pretty good. Either way, there's a ceiling and eventually as they age, their peers who got regular jobs will start to outpace them. Then they'll start to get old, and the GM will try and get younger servers more shifts and they'll start to get pushed out. Then they're fricked and end up bartending in a daiquiri shop.

My Uncle in law is a head waiter at one of the Wynn's steakhouses.. Dude lives a good life. That's all I got.

I worked at Bennigans back in the day and made 100/nt on weekends and 70 or so on weeknights
I also worked in nicer restaurants and only did slightly better because the tables don't turn over as quick and you usually get fewer tables

I worked at Ninfa's in BR while in college, and was guaranteed to make at least $100 on Thursday - Saturday nights. It financed my partying.

I'm sure it's looked down upon here but I had some good times and worked with some good people
It was also nice making cash, that was mostly tax free

It depends on the restaurant and your people skills. I worked in a restaurant growing up, the money was so great for just being a part time worker. I could easily make 200 bucks on weekend nights.

If you are good at what you do, and work at even a half decent restaurant, it's a good living for a single individual until you find a career oriented job.

I absolutely loved waiting tables when I did it. Wouldn't do it again now though that I'm older.
Bonus, everyone fricks everyone when you work in a restaurant. Good money and easy to get laid.

There's a few waiters at Galatoires making $100,000 but those guys have been the over 15 years.
