They do not make nearly as much as they say they do. Servers are notorious about lying about their tips. When a sever says they average 300 on weekends that means they once made 300 on a weekend.

beats me, but I tip 20%. So if they are in a place where I'm spending a couple hundred bucks, they're doing very damn well to pay attention to me.

If they worked at a place like Lone Star, and they say they pulled in that type of money, than it's probably false, but if they worked at a place that consistently had a wait, and if they were turning a lot of tables, than they probably weren't exaggerating.

I worked at the bennigans in Lafayette in the early 90 's, during its prime. We were open later than anyone in town, so it was the service industry hangout. It was pretty common to walk out with over $>300 on a busy weekend night, and it was fun as hell to.

I was waiting tables at the end of college, and for about a year and a half after. Made over $20 an hour with minimal taxes taken out. I had two roommates that worked at the same restaurant, and in our early twenties, we felt like we lived like kings on the money we made. Made it hard to get a real job, work twice as many hours, and take a pay cut.
I always say I hated waiting tables, but I loved working in a restaurant...always had cash, always had people to go party with. Good times back in the day.
If I ever become President, it will be law for every citizen to have to wait tables for sixth months.

Buddy's wife worked at Tantra on South Beach and $500 a night was low end. If they had closed VIP party she could make $1500. Nice to work where people pay $2000 for bottles of liquor

I have never worked in a restaurant so i cant speak first hand. But one of my roommates in college did and he brought home MULTIPLE girls that he worked with throughout his time there.

It was booming when I was there. There were nights with $3k in liquor sales alone for the popular waiters. Industry folks are the best to serve.

Also true...I was fat, smoked and was pretty much a piece of shite and got laid fairly easily when I was in the service industry. Even by the sorostitues I worked with in BR. When you start hanging with each other from 11 pm till 2 am multiple nights a week, t's inevitable.

Not trying to rag on you because I'm assuming you mean they deal with the general public and people are aweful. However, it does crack me up when waiters act like working in a restaurant was like a tour in Nam or they were volunteers in the peace corps and lived in some shithole in Africa. Just be honest and admit it's a job that you can make decent cash with limited qualifications, do drugs, and not have regular 9-5 hours like the day walkers.

Waiters complain a shite ton but don't let that fool you. Pick an average to above average restaurant and waiting tables is the best way to make a lot of cash in an extremely short amount of time.

It can be good money for a college kid. But not good money compared to a professional career. Plus any money is not "gauranteed". Same as bartenders in college. I know guys still tending bar 5 years after we graduated because the money is good and they like the life. Yeah ~30 bucks an hour to tend bar is pretty cool while college kids are in town). But a few years of real work and 60 bucks an hour with benefits and security is a whole lot better.

A know a head waiter at a very nice restaurant in New Orleans, and he was pulling in around $150k/yr. He is very much the exception. Now, he does it part time and works a regular job with full benefits the rest of the time
