I dont think most feel sorry for themselves but then I also know a few who love to play that card.

Yep, if Dad pops out for a pack of smokes and never comes back I'm capable of feeling bad for the mom.

It depends on the situation, but I certainly don't think it should be viewed as a blanket sympathy card they can play.

Some people get dealt a shitty hand by life and they're doing their best to deal with it.

Others make poor life choices and should also have to deal with it. These are the ones that are usually most vocal about deserving respect and stuff. frick them.

I don't, because typically it is a situation that could have been avoided.

Exactly. I've got a cousin who was with piece of trash, everyone told her he was a piece of garbage. She got knocked up by said piece of trash, and he left her high and dry to take care of a baby. I feel bad for the kid more than the Mom.

Girl definitely will let the world know that she is a single mom amd how tough she has it though.

I don't automatically, but I deal with one daily who complains how broke she is yet lives at home for free after age 30, gets free childcare from her baby daddy's mom, and shops constantly. Maybe I'd feel slightly bad if she didn't sleep around unprotected so often. So I think she has altered my view.

No. The vast majority of the time, it is on them because they made several terrible choices.

I don't think it is automatic, but when they do, it is only for single mother. Never a single father, no matter what kind of crap he has been through.

single mother is often praised today by the media. But noone ever brings up the causes of single motherhood. Children with single mothers are 2-10 times more likely to face the risk of:

1. substance abuse
2. behavior problems
3. gang activities
4. suicide
5. dropping out all level of education
6. incarciration
7. STDs
8. having children outside of relationships - becoming teenage parents
9. criminal behavior
10. running away
11. health problems

Depends. If your husband died while deployed or your wife died of cancer then you have some sympathy from me. That's a hard thing to deal with. Although I think it's important to distinguish between sympathy and pity. No one wants to be pitied. Pity isn't a good thing. It's belittling and condescending. If you forgot to use a condom and aren't 100% on who the father is then no. This person might have my pity.

ETA: I guess I ignored the more common situation. Single mother because of divorce. Maybe or maybe not a deadbeat partner. No sympathy. They picked that partner, often using poor judgement. I don't look down too much on them. Sometimes I guess it's hard to really judge who you choose. But still they are in a situation of their own making.

If the single mom gets child support and her ex gets the kid every other weekend I find it hard to be sympathetic. If you don't have these two things and your parents don't support you, keep the kids while you go out, and you are not remarried then I will have sympathy for you.
