Bengal had the patio for drinking outdoors, correct?

Yes. You had French doors to get outside. Patio fronted Highland but it was a solid brick wall. Thank goodness considering where it was.

And the Long Island Ice Teas were legit.

I think there’s several factors at play here.

Cost for sure has to be a deterrent.

Then there’s the fear now of ruining your future. Everything gets filmed on iPhones these days. fricking everything. I imagine there’s a lot that don’t want to go out and get blackout drunk and then wake up to becoming a viral video/meme

More recreational drugs to choose from and weed is more accessible. Hell just going to an LSU game this season was eye opening. Everywhere you walk on campus smells like fricking nasty arse weed. People have always smoked weed in college but now it seems everyone is smoking it anywhere and everywhere

Then there’s those little dweebs vaping jump drives of God knows what, e-cigs etc.

LSU 08-12… all you can drink till 10 every night, wine night, penny pitchers, the drink exchange. It was cheaper to drink at bars than at home.

Did you go out a lot in college?

The only time I’ve heard of that scenario was Fred’s invitational. Which was a few times a year.

It seems like when I was in school.. Late 90s, early 2000s it was assumed you were going out on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Fred's wasn't the only place to go. Then there was Lafayette.

As for as students today, I don't know what these kids do. My brother's son turned 21.. in 2023.. so two years ago. He told my brother he wanted to go to tiger land just to see what goes on. My brother told him he doesn't need to go because he doesn't go out much and he could get himself into a bad situation without even knowing it. I asked my brother why did he even ask him? He is 21 years old just fricking go. My brother moved out the house at 18, went out all the time.

It blew my mind. I asked my brother if his friends go out. He said something like "one of them went out awhile back".. I asked him what they do and he said they work out, they play videos games, hang out at each others house on the weekends, people will go over there sometimes. And people complain because they can't find someone to date.. Maybe reduce the time you spend on the playstation and go do some social shite... Like people did for pretty much the whole 20th century and first decade of the 2000s. You can play your video games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights if nothing else is going on.

Is that why they have made school easier for them?

Im joking, I don't know if it is or not, but I do hear of a lot more kids getting really high scores on ACTs, etc

I think I’ve seen reports that younger generations consume a lot less alcohol. If that’s true, then it would make sense college bar attendance would suffer. Couple that with the conveniences of modern technology shifting the parameters of social interaction, as well as the rising costs of going out. Maybe it’s just a sign that times they are a changing. Could be permanent or cyclical.

Another piece I read to this puzzle:

You cannot go out and get wasted anymore and let loose. Someone will record you and try and make you go viral. No one wants to go to the bars and have fun with all the cellphones.

I'm impressed you remember the schedule. I don't remember dudes getting free drinks ever, but they sure were cheap.

I don’t think this is true. Unless you are like Reggie’s 86 girl, you can probably get plastered and stumble around as much as you want. Is someone really gonna make you famous because you’re puking in the parking lot?

When I was in college, I used to go out constantly. That was my problem. Great, great times.
That was back when Tigerland was a good neighborhood.

All of the uptown bars were packed on the weekends and most places had great specials. Chicks got insane specials.

Every Friday at Par 4s, I don't remember the exact price but it was all you can drink from like 7 to 9 for like $10. You could ask for more than 1 drink which you needed to do because the place was packed.

Rendon Inn had bladder bust. Same deal. Real cheap cover charge and you drank for free until someone used the bathroom.

Le Bon Temps Roule had buy 1 pint get 3 free oysters so 4 pints got a free dozen oysters and the pints were cheap.

The boot had something similar with buy a pitcher get free crawfish.

Sunday night was cheap pitchers and movie night at Waldos.

I went out about every Thursday - Sunday. If you knew the specials, you could get torn up on the cheap Uptown. Even adjusting for inflation, prices are insanely higher now. I'm old so I don't know if places still have great specials like they did back in the day.

They go out a LOT less, unless they’re the rich ones with daddy’s CC.

Did you and your wife go out to a college bar? Plenty of places still have drink specials, but I’m guessing you went to some fancy pants establishment and are making an apples to oranges comparison here

SLU early to mid-90’s was pretty awesome

Agree 100%. I used to bounce at Mickey's back in the day. Wednesdays was "ladies $5 drink free til' 12 & $1.00 draft for the guys". At the time, SLU had girl to guy ratio of 5:1. Needless to say, back then the odds were forever in your favor.
Chevy's (attached to Stray Cats) was the only dance club I can think of, and was the place to be on a Thursday night.

My typical Mon-Fri game plan with only $40 cash and a few groceries sent from home:
-*Survive on Ramen noodles at $0.15/pack thru Wed
-Wed- case of beer and $5 cover
-Thu- remaining went to Chevy's/Stray Cats for a helluva night.
-Fri - back to home to local bars and reload.

I know cost of living has changed in the 20 something years, however when you're a young buck.....you always manage to find a way for booze and split toe.

One thing I commend the younger generation on is their lack of desire to drink.

Hopefully in 10 years alcohol will be phased out much like cigarettes were.
