It seems like the real men in here are not so fragile. I absolutely wore gloves when I replaced the wheel hub assemblies on my Tacoma. I also wear gloves when replacing rotors, because brake fluid will frick your skin up. I'm thinking OP has never done any actual work on his vehicle beyond a tire change.

My mechanic friend has black gloves and when we work on vehicles we use the black gloves so we don't get black shite and oil and grease on shite he doesn't want dirtied. It's important some parts go in and stay clean, and it's a lot easier to change gloves than constantly wash your hands.

As a former mechanic latex are far superior to nitrile. They can handle chemicals and not rip and fall apart as easily. Gloveworks hd latex is the brand I prefer but are more expensive than nitrile. If you are doing basic soy boy shite on your car then nitrile is fine.

A box of gloves is a couple bucks and worth it to keep in the garage for working on engines or handling chemicals.

handling chemicals.

This should always be a bigger consideration than dirty fingernails.

Only the poors still use latex gloves. I'll throw on a pair of nitrile gloves when changing my own oil. It's a lot quicker than scrubbing with Dawn soap after.

I have huge hands, I have a box of nitrile gloves but they don't fit as well as the latex. I put a pair on if I'm cleaning the BBQ grill, adding chlorine tabs to the pool, peeling shrimp (gives a better grip than bare-handed).

An added step is to apply a hand moisturizer before putting on the gloves. Keeps them nice and soft

My routine is :

Trader Joes hand moisturizer
Harbour Freight Heavy Duty Nitrile gloves
Gorilla gloves (to protect nitrile gloves)

If you are working for a couple hours the hand moisturizer really locks in and gives you a radiant glow. Hands betray your age if you don't take good care of them.

Not latex but nitrile...they are more durable. I don't do it every time but I do sometimes....lot easier to clean up afterwards unless you tear the damned things.

Nitrile gloves. When I am pulling the oil drain plug or the old filter, at least. Afterwards, once the old filter is drained, I used the gloved to wrap it up to ensure there are no leaks. Outside of that, I can't think of any other times I bother, though it probably isn't a bad idea when changing out brakes.
