I have a 7 ring check binder and I note what the check is on the recipt side of the binder. I still write a lot of checks for parts and supplies. Why? It allows me to collect payment before I actually have funds transferred from the account.

If I am buying 400-500 worth of parts, I can use a check and that will pull out after the $1000-1100 income is deposited.
So you are never really paying out of pocket for supplies.

I use credit a lot too, but checks are easiest for my main supplier. I put in a order, get a total, pick up my boxes, hand the filled out check and get the invoices.

I mail in my monthly sales taxes by check too to every parish. I like the extra paper trail for certain things.

Though i use quick books to balance everything for the most part, I just keep a log of checks.

Yep. Don't have that many bills so it takes about 2 minutes.

Check with the bank and see if they offer a type of account that provides free checks.

I refuse to pay banking fees, so I keep whatever balance they require to avoid a monthly fee, get free checks, free cashier checks, etc.

I reconcile my checking account every Monday. I primarily use AMEX. I have alerts set at $5 every time my wife or I charge, so then I go make a payment. I essentially use it like a debit card.

I reconcile my checking account every Monday so I can categorize the charges. Then I apply them to my budget.

I think in the last 3 or 4 years the only times I've ever written a check have been to reimburse older family members for things since they don't have venmo or paypal.

The address on my checks are the address I lived at 6 years ago lol

I would If I used checks with any frequency. As it is, it took me 10 years to use one box of checks and probably longer to use this new one. Good chance by then I'll of completely gotten off physical checks altogether.

My retaliation to the bank was to take 5k out of the checking account and transfer it to an online Ally savings account which pays 1% interest. The checking pays nothing and has a $700 minimum or there is a monthly fee. I'll keep the min in like you said to avoid the fee but I won't let the bank earn interest, however small, on that extra 5k.

That all sounds responsible and slightly interesting, but doesn't it eat up a ton of time? I mean, that can't be fun sitting down and running numbers every Monday.

The reason I don't reconcile my checking is because it takes time chasing down that 0.05 that I can't account for. If I get screwed out of $10 somewhere then it's worth it just not to have wasted the time of worrying about it.

Used to enjoy balancing the book.

Now I just run through all the charges online to make sure there aren't any shenanigans.

I keep an old fashioned paper check register only to keep track of uncleared checks, and that's maybe 2 per month. I otherwise check my mobile bank app every couple of days to see what the better half is up to. Haven't felt the need to reconcile with a monthly statement for years.

Once you get your own system in place, it really takes very little time. Between looking at my checking account online, matching to my register, and entering it into a budget spreadsheet, it probably takes 10-15mins.

another fundamental but important skill being lost on you whippersnappers because of the over dependence on technology, along with things like spelling, grammar, and basic arithmetic

Goodness. You pay your CC every time you make a purchase? I use my credit cards for everything for credit/points as well, but I pay them off every Friday. I couldn't keep up with paying them off every time I make a purchase.

You know you can just wait until the end of the billing cycle

I write maybe a half dozen checks a month. Check my account on-line maybe two or three times a month for the auto debits to enter in my checkbook ledger.

I like for my budget and balances to be as close to real time as possible. Then I know if I can put excess in savings every 15th and 30th.

I would, but my wife doesn't keep up with debit card receipts so there is no real reason to do it.

Also, with all the fraud now, I log in to all my different accounts at least every other day to make sure nothing crazy is going on.
