"Waitron" was proposed as a gender neutral term for a waiter or waitress. It is now in Merriam Webster, with the explanation below, and they view it as "popular." I've never heard anyone use it. Anyone here use it?

quote:

The word is probably a blend of "waiter/waitress" and "-tron," a suffix that seems to allude to the machinelike impersonality of waiting tables. It may also have been influenced by "neutron," which is assumed to come from the word neutral and so implies the gender-neutrality of "waitron." "Waitron" is a popular yet vaguely disparaging and somewhat informal term. A more common (albeit less colorful) gender-neutral substitute for "waiter" or "waitress" is "server."

Not since 1989. And then not because it was gender-neutral. Just because we did stupid things like that.

Interesting how everyone eventually mimics the things that will eventually replace them.

Is waiter not gender-neutral? A waiter is one who waits on you. You can have a female waiter or a male waiter.

Much like a nurse - you can have a female or male nurse. There is nothing inherently sexual about the descriptor.

This BS has got to stop. What's next? Pilots? Are we going to need to invent some BS gender-neutral term for them? Doctor? Lawyer? President?

If anything, men are the ones who are typically forced to not have their gender recognized - a female host gets to be called a hostess, a female waiter gets waitress, a female steward gets stewardess, a female actor gets actress... men just have to use the generic descriptor.

I've only known the word to be a combination of the words waiter and moron.
Never knew it to be a gender neutral term

Only place I have ever heard that term was by an employee at Louie's.

In their defense a number of said waitrons defied description IIRC.
