Those would be half-brothers and half-sisters, not step siblings.

My dad was adopted. After doing a DNA test, he discovered he had a half brother (on his mom’s side) on the other side of the country. I guess near her death, she told him about giving my dad up for adoption when she was very young. They connected, talk occasionally I guess, Facebook friends, and met up once when he was in this part of the US. That was the most of it. I think my dad is content with his current family and told me he was never interested in seeking out his biological parents.

I won’t do one but did for my dog and have family who did. If anyone in your family did it, you’re in there, too. Guess it doesn’t matter. I still won’t do one, though.

I did it, and I am glad that I did. It is totally anonymous if you handle it correctly. And I thought it was very interesting to find out where your ancestors actually came from (as opposed to the folklore handed down through generations by your family).

I opted out of the service where they find people that are related to you because I think there is nothing to be gained by that.

create a throwaway email to register the test and use a fake name. Like Shane Golang and a ShaneGolang222@gmail.com email address.

Nobody needs to know that your real name is David.

Ah, yes. I was waiting to see who would catch my "mistake" first.

Don't do it unless: 1- you have relatives with genetic disorders which you might carry. 2- you want to fill in gaps in your family history.

I had 23&Me do DNA 10 years ago and found I do not carry gene for blood disorder of a half sister. I also found a lost branch of my grandfather's family that filled a gap for me and them... no drama.

The only downside has been pretty minor. About once a year I get a message from some extremely distant cousin who wants up-close friendship with new-found kin. They ask for personal email. I very seldom respond.

DNA tailored medicine has great promise. DNA-tailored discrmination and fraud are also highly likely.

What say the OT? Yay or nay?
Nay. I got some for Christmas a few years ago. Harmless gift. Seemed fun at the time. Never took it. Now, will never take it. If I can own my own genetic material, maybe? But i think SCOTUS has already ruled that once you give up the goods, it no longer belongs to you.

" The special cell line you're referring to is called the HeLa cell line. It was derived from the cancer cells of Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman who was treated for cervical cancer in 1951. Her cells were taken without her knowledge or consent, but they became the first immortalized human cell line and have been crucial in numerous medical breakthroughs."

I believe her family and estate got nada.

Had a buddy do this and regretted it. Found out his still living grandmother had slept with the hired Mexican help and that's how his mom was made. A massive family shite show ensued.

Grandmother and grandfather knew but told no one. Said their daughter had gotten the families native american gene lol

Do the test or don't. It's just a matter of time before familial DNA rats out everyone

done Ancestry and it has been neat to find out more about where I am from. I also did a month subscription through a deal with one of my CC and it allowed me to trace my people back to England

My mom did this. Traced her family back to 13th century England. Descendants of the mayflower.
