That is my issue. I will tip on to go orders and pick up at counter.
If I phone in an order and my food is ready on time, it’s hot and things are packed correctly with utensils, napkins, etc. that is important to me. Giving them ten percent seems fair.

ETA: Concerning situations where it's just "to-go" or "pickup" type orders, just be an adult and hit no when asked for a tip. It's not difficult.
Don't take away something for people to complain about

quote:You tip 18-20% for quality service from a waiter who tends to your table for an entire meal (maybe 40-60 minutes). Takes your order, makes recommendations, brings your drinks and food, checks to see when you need refills or anything else. 18-20% for all that.
The cooks and staff need to eat too. Leaving a ten per cent tip for to go orders seems fair to me.
But the take out person gets 10% when the only thing they're doing is boxing up your food and putting plastic utensils in the bag? Not even 2 minutes work.
I leave $1 or $2 for take out orders from actual restaurants (not fast food). But thats about it.
Cook's wages need to be baked into the price of the food. If you're leaving big tips on takeout orders, you're tipping before you even know if the food was good or sucked.
ETA: if you want to tip 10% on take out, go ahead. My main issue is the spread of "would you like to add a tip" to fast food joints

Agreed. Tips are factored in on my decision to eat in a restaurant or pick up to go. I will throw the barista at starbucks a buck because it is nice and we have all had jobs in college etc. But this absolutely zero service at decent restaurants is going to make me tip less and probably not return if it appears the front of house is not paying attention or caring either.

I was discussing this awhile back, the issue is that the amount of the bill has gone up, and people don't like spending more money on food. They're gonna tip the same amount that they usually do, it just seems like less because it doesn't go as far anymore.

a lot of receipts will show the after-tax total as what you calculate the tip on rather than showing the sub total without the tax added in
IF someone is too stupid to know how to calculate a tip on their own without having to go by what the restaurant “suggests” on the bill then they deserve to have to overpay on the tip.

There’s also something messed up about the fact that you’re expected to tip more for the exact same thing just because the restaurant decided to charge more for it. The steak you brought me today is the exact same steak you brought me last month. Just because the menu is 10% higher doesn’t seem like the tip should have to be. The correlation of tip to bill really gets tested during times of inflation.

The last 3 orders to go that I picked up for myself were wrong. Suggest you always check what's in your bag before leaving to head home with your food to insure everything you ordered is included.

Our past two dining out experiences this week have resulted in lower than normal tips. Absolutely horrible service.
We've been blindsided recently by great service in the last month. Both in Gonzales.
1. Kamals on Airline @ 74
2. Mike Andersons on 30 near I-10
at both joints, we had incredibly good servers and service with high quality food. We were kinda in shock.

It's not about stupidity, it's about not having the information in front of you. If you aren't presented an itemized receipt but instead only a grand to,tal whether you calculate it yourself or have suggestions doesn't matter. The tip is inflated because you're tipping on the tax as well.
Places have been sued for the suggestions including the after tax amount. Which is also shady, but my issue is specificahy with when they don't provide the subtotal.

It would be great if restaurants were actually required to pay their employees at least minimum wage.
Minimum Wages for Tipped Employees
Here are the states with ridiculously low minimum wages for tipped employees (pay per hour):
Arkansas - $2.63
Delaware - $2.23
Idaho - $3.35
Iowa - $4.35
Maryland - $3.63
New Hampshire - $3.26
New Jersey - $5.26
New Mexico - $3.00
North Dakota - $4.86
Ohio - $5.05
Oklahoma - $2.13
Pennsylvania - $2.83
Rhode Island - $3.89
South Dakota - $5.40
Wisconsin - $2.33
West Virginia - $2.62
Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wyoming - All $2.13

CC's gets my order wrong every time and they still try to hand me the little mobile pay thingy that asks for a tip.
NOPE. The only time I tip is if I dine in and get waited on

How do you know if it is fixed right at the time you would tip them? Are you coming back a few days later and tipping then?

How about the gourmet candy store? A tip for bagging a piece of fudge? Those iPad points of sale can have too turned off, but managers are lazy. I won’t tip anyone who hasn’t served me at a sit down meal or delivery (which I pick it up, don’t do delivery). If $7 per hour isn’t enough to make pumpkin lattes, find a new career. No tip.

I probably would!
Had AC service (not cheap) and 2 weeks later it was not working. They wanted to charge for a 2nd service.
