quote:This world is crazy. What a freak accident.
A female diner was killed in a freak accident in front of her family when an umbrella flew through the air and severed the artery in her neck, according to authorities in South Carolina.
Dana Weinger, 56, had been eating al fresco Saturday with her husband and other family members when she was killed at the Driftwood Grill Home of the Lazy Gator at Lake Marion in Summerton.
“It was a strong, strong wind, like a microburst that came through and knocked not just the umbrella, it knocked all of the furniture, and other debris came onto where they were sitting,” Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell told KTVB.

If that’s your wife or loved one how do even deal with that? Traumatic

Happens a couple of times a year at the beach. Slicing the neck is a different approach though. The beach accidents usually have someone getting speared by the umbrella pole.

I can see that at the beach. I can see it causing some injuries. Severing the neck artery while at a restaurant is pretty crazy.

That’s why they sell umbrella policies.

quote:I may be the only one because my family laughs at me, but I get major anxiety on a really windy day at the beach because of umbrellas and tents. Doesn’t take too much for a gust to send an umbrella or a tailgate tent flying right into a child.

We now have the cloth ones where you fill the legs with sand so now I just have anxiety from the neighbors umbrella spearing my child in the face

You aren’t alone, I just don’t show my family the internal anxiety so they can continue to enjoy themselves while I’m watching upwind and getting accused of checking out the talent (I am, but I seem to always get caught when I’m not even looking at them)

Unless it’s a hurricane or bad wind/rainstorm I never have anxiety over wind. At least not until today.

Yes I saw the picture. I don’t understand how that stuff isn’t tied down better? It looks fairly light weight even though it has some surface area to the umbrella. Probably a very light aluminum.

That freaking sucks to go out that way... one moment relaxing while dining, the next, dead.

Had a good buddy die that way a few years ago. From N La. One of the nicest guys you'd ever meet.
