You see these all the time in movies. “Member of chess club.” But weirdly, in my rural Mississippi high school, we didn’t have one. I just played against the computer in Windows XP whenever I wanted to play.

In my Freshman year, the school computer lab got updated with machines running Windows XP. That Chess game that came built-in more or less satiated any competitive urges of any chess enthusiast my school might’ve had.

But, then again, most of my friends played the Pinball Windows XP game, so I might’ve been the only chess enthusiast in the entire school.

We had one of these...

Most couldn't grasp the concept.

Here is our high school best player...

As you can see, she made a fatal move and lost this match.

High school Chess clubs/teams are common in the Houston area. Offer varsity letters. My college in Houston offered a chess club and varsity letters.

I didn’t know there were high schools that don’t have a Chess club.

Aside from really shitty public ones.

I graduated w 70 people in rural Oklahoma. I’d be very surprised if there 10 people in the whole school that even knew how to play chess

A lot of HSs have chess clubs, or at least used to before the advent of PCs (I can't speak for now).

But that never seemed to lead to an overall increase in popularity for chess -- clearly the kids stop playing when they get out of school
