I was homeschooled in capoeira after watching Only the Strong. By that, I mean my brother and I tried kicking cartwheels at each other in the front yard.

Took Shito-Ryu Karate for two years in the 70s, starting at age 26. The dojo was traditional with many instructors from JKF in Japan. Couldn’t spar worth a crap. I continue to workout at home 4x week and have had a total of about 9,000 to 10,000 workouts since 1973. At age 76, my karate is stronger and better than when I was in my 20s. It’s all about defense: footwork, blocking and multiple punch combos. Still a blue belt. Would say that my overall ability today is between green belt and brown belt.

Taekwondo when I was 6.
The only thing I remember was the teacher demonstrating a roundhouse kick and asking which kick it was. I raised my hand first and said roundhouse. He asked if I knew or if it was a guess. I was flustered 6 year old who had never encountered that follow up, so I said “um, guess”.
Then I sat there while he fields 7+ plus more answers, mostly from older kids, before someone again says roundhouse with the key phrase “I know.”
Sure, it was a life lesson about having conviction, but it really pissed me off. Still pisses me off. I was a freaking kindergartener.

Nope but I sure as hell loved it when I was about to throw with someone and they got into a 'karate' or other such stance. I knew immediately they would get obliterated. Its absolutely useless in actual fighting. There's some poor guy down in Milledgeville Ga that was supposed to be some 'Krav Maga' expert and I damn near about killed the guy. Welp.

I took karate back in the late 70s as a kid. It was at the height of the karate craze back then. I thought it was cool but looking back the sensei was about as accomplished as Danny McBride in The Foot Fist Way.
Oddly enough those classes "saved" me once. I had a horrible black eye from taking a bad infield bounce right in the socket (back in the day of mixed grass/dirt elementary school fields long before the MLB level grooming lil Braxton plays on). I was wearing a pair of large mirrored sunglasses to hide the mark of shame and walking back home from the arcade I happened onto a pair of brothers who were "group 5" kids which was our school district's way of openly designating a kid as damn near retarded. They interpreted my glasses as an attempt to be cool versus a way to hide my abusive relationship with a overly aggressive baseball. They chased me and cornered me behind the row of stores. When the one my age recognized me he told his brother (a year younger) that is lil Obtuse, leave him alone "he knows some shite". Those afternoons mastering 6th grade level karate coupled with a pair of kids that had the mental power of an unripe watermelon transformed me for 10 glorious seconds into Daniel LaRusso.

Brown Belt Tae Kwon Do, Blue Belt Kung Fu, boxing. Would still shoot you before fighting if it came down to it. Except for Sonic. I’ll check knuckles there.

Taekwondo for about 3 years from age 10-12 or so. Enjoyed it, had a ball actually fighting other kids my age at tournaments. Also boxed golden glove during part of the same period and loved it also. Wasn't very good at either but it was fun. Both were VERY good at improving foot work for playing football...when I reached 7th grade football I had as good a footwork for a lineman as most high school seniors had. I was also in extremely good shape so football practice had little impact on me...unlike my friends who had been riding bikes to the creek and splashing around all summer. I would highly recommend one or the other for kids...it is fun and good for them.
