Yep. Which I'm saying that is how it should be. Forcing her to go to a certain college would be a bad idea. OP should try to give her incentives to pick a decision that benefits the both of them.

I went to A&M Commerce east of Dallas while I was within 20 miles of it. The campus is literally in the middle of nothing. I think there's a McDonalds, a Mexican restaurant, a donut shop and a small Walmart nearby. I guess at A&M they figure if you'll put up with that for a year you deserve a transfer

Not much has changed.

They're doing a lot of construction on campus right now. The campus looks nice, but commerce as a city is still shitty.

That Mexican place downtown is really fricking good though.

I like just the opposite. Have her live at home first yr so y’all can help (really continue helping) with meals, clothes, etc. while she makes the adjustment to college. if she starts off on a bad foot it could be hard to recoup.

I agree, it will be good for her to live on campus (even if close by) so that she might get more involved with student organizations and expand her social circle.

Something to think about though--if she's truly apprehensive about leaving home and goes anyway, she may be so miserable that her grades suffer.

sounds like your daughter is an idiot, you go where you get the most scholarship money and have to pay the least. You then pick which school will offer you the best value for your buck. If you haven't applied for scholarships, you fricked up and shouldn't attend the school.

As an adult your dumbass should know this. Btw my parents stopped caring about my education when I was like 9 or 10. As long as my grades were decent and I stayed in honors they didint give a frick about what I did. Applied for everything on my own.

My parents gave me a choice. Go to LSU and they’ll help pay for my undergrad education and I’m on my own for grad school, or go to SELU for free and they’ll help pay for my grad school. I took option 2, but damn it was hard to pass on LSU

That actually works for A&M, but not UT.

No, I mean this. LINK

I'm in LA so I'm not familiar with how it works, but I think one of my friend's kids did it with UT-Dallas.

Go to Arkansas that scholarship is a great deal and the majority of Arky students are OOS.

Either way, her mom and I believe she'll receive a higher quality education with better opportunities coming out of college by going to Oklahoma instead of North Texas.

It's a piece of paper. I guarantee you it won't make a difference in the long run. Don't choose a school based on academic merit. You get out what you put in and she'll still have to prove her worth after school. Tell her to choose where she feels the most comfortable and can make the most friends.

My folks wanted me to go to LSU and I wanted to go, so no problem at first. With shitty grades freshman year, they wanted me to transfer to UNO and only gave me tuition going forward. I got student loans, grants and a job so I could stay at LSU, and made a few 4.0 semesters once I had to pay for it.

Yes - you tell her where to go.
Agree.

Kinda what we did with my daughter. We knew she would qualify for TOPS, but she wanted Southern Miss. Our stance was she would need scolarships to go out of state and she got them. All we had to pay for was room/board and sorrority, which was a little cheaper than LSU.

What a shitty way to raise your kid.

If the kid does the work to get the scholarship money, they can go wherever they want. If they are relying on their parents money, then they should have to rely on their parent's decisions as well.

We had a local university in my hometown and my parents paid the tuition - if I attended the LOCAL university.
For my spending money, I worked nights and weekends at a restaurant.

If you are helping out then you need to tell her at which universities your help will be available. Either way it's her choice. Putting your foot down will only lead to resentment.

Let her pick. My parents told me where I could and couldn’t go and I was miserable where I eventually picked. That became a very dark time in my life. I hated where I was at, I wanted to come home and I never wanted to be there in the first place.

Undergrad doesn’t mean anything. And where you are you also have UT Dallas and UT Arlington. One of mine loved UT Arlington.

Forget the scholarship offers (in gross amount) when making this decision. Look at the net cost. If she has a free ride to OU or Arkansas, don’t pay out of pocket to go to UNT. If the total cost minus total scholarships is greater than UNT total costs, let her decide.

Or just have her pay for her own college, if you don’t approve of the choices.

It sounds like you already know what you should do, but you are hoping the OT can convince you to take the easy way out.
