So is UNT in-state tuition with no scholarships equal to or less than the other 2 with out-of-state tuition but scholarships?

And if she went to UNT would she live on campus or at home since it's only 20 minutes away?
Money really isn't in the equation. It's more what's best for her overall, not what's best for our bank account.

Could she live at home and go to UNT? Yes, but we want her to live on campus at least her first year.

As someone working in higher ed in Texas, make sure there’s a plan for if she DOESN’T transfer to UT. It’s harder to do than most seem to realize.

It's not a 5 year old wanting ice cream, it's an 18 year old trying to figure out something that will determine the rest of their life. If you boil it down to "I'm paying, I make the call" that's shitty af.

Yes, we're very well aware of how difficult it can be to get there. The whole being in the top 5% of your class requirement at UT makes it tough when you go to a public school with a graduating class of nearly 1000, and come from an area with a high concentration of extremely talented Asians from India and Japan. I bet there were only a dozen Caucasian kids in the top 5%.

Aren't there some other UT schools that are feeder schools for easier transfer to UT-Austin through the CAP? Or is it too late for her to do that?

My son lives in Hammond and chose LSU himself rather than the local SLU. He had full/partial rides to most public schools in state. LSU cost a little more out of pocket, but I wanted him to get out and experience life away from his mommas.

In your situation, if boyfriend is a contributing factor, keep in mind the flip side of the coin if you force her to go away from him.

I chose but I specifically picked the college that was 200 miles away because my parents said I had to live at home if I went to the closer university. <--- 18-year old logic

Do you know anyone in her selected field that can talk with her? Or simply reach out to someone. When I was working I GLADLY talked with several students trying to decide. I was able to give an honest perspective and real life/real time advice for my field. Any of my peers would have done the same.

Chances are with a teenage girl at this point in her life, anyone else's advice is going to carry more weight than yours. Sad but true.

wait until your kid wants to go out of state at 40k per year vs the school 25 miles away at 15k. I see a "this isn't a damn democracy" conversation in your future

I was 100% on my own at 18. I made all my own decisions.

I grew up in BTR so the answer was easy. My kids made their own choice.

You go in state or out?

That's a different situation. Of course the answer here is take the free college or good luck with a bunch of stupid debt.

I'm talking about the overall sentiment that it's your decision solely because you may pay some of the way. That's a shitty way at looking at it.

If my kid is that dumb to not get scholarship money to a state school, I'll probably just drown it.

You obviously don't have a teenage daughter.

Such a shitty stereotype, she’s going to be an adult making adult decisions soon. If you can’t hold a conversation with her discussing lifelong decisions, maybe she doesn’t need to go to any college.

My dad gave me a list of schools and majors and said if I wanted his help I needed to pick from those two list. Otherwise I was free to take out student loans like the rest of the population and go wherever I wanted. Needless to say I picked from the list. Graduating debt free was one of the best decisions I ever made.

So he let you make the decision on your future without some authoritarian "my money, my say" bullshite.

Be glad she’s both capable of, AND going to college.

Yep. Which I'm saying that is how it should be. Forcing her to go to a certain college would be a bad idea. OP should try to give her incentives to pick a decision that benefits the both of them.

That actually works for A&M, but not UT.

I went to A&M Commerce east of Dallas while I was within 20 miles of it. The campus is literally in the middle of nothing. I think there's a McDonalds, a Mexican restaurant, a donut shop and a small Walmart nearby. I guess at A&M they figure if you'll put up with that for a year you deserve a transfer.
