Yep.

Hand, belts

Glad they did it and I will for sure whoop my kids.

Timeout is for future serial killers and mass drug producers.

Yes. With paddle or hand.

Didn't deserve. Wrongly convicted.

Feared parents to and extent. Probably more respect than fear.

Timeouts are dumb and would only give me time to think about how to get in more trouble.

Well obviously that's not a true timeout. Research supports timeouts as a more effective strategy. Corporal punishment is rarely used correctly (e.g., immediate), habituation is common (have to get more intensive to maintain effectiveness), and it often escalates the situation, especially when it's an overly emotional response.

Not often as a kid, but my 18th birthday present was getting gangster-slapped by my Dad, because HE went off and got drunk, and when he came back, I wasn't at work (he was my ride). He was a boxer when he was young, and he knew how to hit people.

Took me a looong time to forgive him for that shite.

Dad usually used a little skinny belt (1960's, don'tcha know)

Grandma and Maw Maw used switches.

Mom used the fly swatter if it was handy.

For my 8th birthday we took a family vacation to Astro World. My dad bought a paddle with Astro World embossed on it. Then on the handle he wrote; "Astro Ride, Free to all bad kids who need a ride" i got my arse tore up more times than I can remember with that thing. And yes...... I deserved it.

Pops tore my arse up a few times with the belt, but I deserved it. Mom would put me in timeout, but that only works on kids who thrive attention. I didn't care and would stay there all day. Also received a few more arse whoopings from dad when I laughed at mom trying to spank me.

I think that is all logical.......if you raise a shithead of a kid that doesnt respect discipline and his parents/adults/peers in general. If you raise your kid to be respectful, then true discipline (a serious arse-whipping) is only needed perhaps less than 10 times throughout the entirety of childhood. You cant just make a statement about corporal punishment and assume that it's all or nothing. It must be used in conjuction with appropriation for the amount of discipline needed. You cant just whip your kids arse every time they dont listen or when they throw a tantrum, because that would be alot of arse whippings that would have to progressively get worse to maintain maximum effectiveness (which is your point). However, to say that "timeout" is enough discipline to stand on it's own without any type of physical punishment is absurd. How can you justify timeout as a just punishment and condemn spanking for the reason of prolonged ineffectiveness when they can just as easily be conditioned and immune to timeout punishment? They must be used together. If anything, spanking when needed combined with talking would lead to less incidents than timeouts when needed combined with talking. Fear from your father is a very convincing thing on a kids conscience when getting dared to do something mischievous by their friends, no matter how canaille a kid can be.

can tell you its not effective at all. And studies will show the same thing. I never once in my childhood didnt do something for fear of getting my arse beat. Its not preventive. Its retaliatory.

Ehhhh, that's kind of BS. I definitely didn't do much to get in serious trouble until I was around 18. Didn't drink much at all or do to many of the other crazy things some of my other high school friends did. And it was mostly due to me being concerned over what my parents would do to me if I acted like that. So to say it's "not effective at all" is bull. And "studies" are of course going to show that corporal punishment isn't effective. Who the hell is going to fund a study that says hitting kids works! . The only people doing these "studies" are doing so to disprove the use of physical punishment.

quote:

If you are a parent who whips their kid you can never honestly say "I would never do anything to hurt you" to your kid.

And this is a bit ridiculous of a statement. I got spanked. I never had anything done to me that did more than leave my arse red for a little while. That "pain" you are causing the kid is miniscule and temporary compared to the lesson you might be teaching them.

Dad was an architect, so the T-Square saw the most action.

quote:

Did you usually deserve it?

Most of the time, yeah.

quote:

Did it make you fear your parents?

Yeah up until I was about 7-8. Then they started taking away things. That worked much better.

quote:

How do you feel about timeouts?

It's lazy parenting. Taking away things for an indeterminate amount of time works better.

I was defiant and the spanking was the only thing that ever deterred me from bad behavior. I never cared about time out, going to my room, cleaning up stuff, etc... I knew I could just get those things done and then go right back to it.

edit: did not fear my parents in general but would not do certain things for fear of a good whipping when dad got home. We did and do have a great relationship so it clearly did not affect me psychologically long term.

All the time, it was mainly an old tattered up leather belt that I use to have nightmares about. Im not gonna lie, i prob deserved every one. One time i remember the most is my dad whipped me so hard my arse was literally black and blue. I couldnt sit for days. My mother was lit one night and decided to hit me w a right hook. Dark times for sure. I believe in spankings no doubt, it usually was something I would think of before I did anything bad. But there is def a difference between spanking and beating.

Belt and switch here...deserved everyone of them except for maybe two of them. My sister lied on me with those two spankings; however, I'm still "in the black," because there was a lot more than two things I got away with!

couple times a week.

everything.
belt. hand. paddle. flyswatter. kitchen spoon. switch. scrap wood

you could put a gun to my head and i'd say about 99% of time i did.

quote:

Did it make you fear your parents?

somewhat. made me fear the consequences of my inevitable frick ups.

quote:

How do you feel about timeouts?

depends on the child. for some it will work. for some it won't. children still need to be punished like it or not. reward systems and promises will never work for some children.
bad parenting if you don't punish children in some form.
