Did the British Empire have a net positive effect on the world?

The largest empire the world has ever known. Amazing how this island in Europe dominated much of the world. For good and bad, they spread the industrialization they started to the far corners of the globe and introduced the world to all sorts of knowledge and ideas. But colonization also introduced violence and disruption to these countries, there was a lot of blood shed in the name of the Queen.
As a whole did the world benefit from the British Empire?

Which raises another question, do you think the European countries losing control of their colonies has been a good thing for the world? Hong Kong is the most obvious example I can think of and for them no, Chinese rule is showing to be worse for them more and more every day. But for the rest of the Empire would they be better off remaining under British rule?

India is better under their own rule. One of the largest economies.
Botswana is one of the fastest growing economies and most stable democracy in Africa after being one of the poorest in the 60s so I think they are doing ok.
Also Bahamas is one of the richest economies in North America after USA and Canada so I think they are better off independent.

So what would the world look like had Britain remained a second tier European nation and never led the commercial and industrial revolutions? Interesting question. Perhaps the Dutch, French, and Spanish would’ve continued domination.
