I’m not actually sure if this was such a crippling a blow. Certainly was not good but I don’t think it was a death blow of any sort. Probably a bigger drain was the 80 Years War.

Spain's colonies, were generally far closer to the equator than Britain's, thus the natives did not die off as completely

I agree, although it’s funny to hear so many people think all native died off and were replaced by Spaniards.

England brought men and women and they produced large families in America, Canada, Australia. Things didn’t work out so well in Jamaica, for instance, but nobody ever brings that up.
Spain brought single men. They were interested in converting the Indians to Catholicism as opposed to starting a new world for anglos (pretty much anglos only). It was just a different approach completely.

Imagine living around a bunch of Mexicans and most of them don’t even realize that Spanish people are white.

The Columbian Exchange absolutely ravaged native populations

It may not have completely eradciated them but it certainly weakened the tribes enough to make them easy to conquer.

I agree but there are a lot of people who think Mexicans and central/south Americans are all Spaniards bc all natives were wiped out.

It wasn't a death blow, but what it did was allow nations other than Spain and Portugal to have access to the New World. When Spain had their armada, they had the ability to protect their claims and essentially shield the entirety of North and South America from any settlement by European countries not named Spain or Portugal. Without the armada, the British and French were able to settle North America and start picking off Caribbean Islands one by one. Spain could no longer effectively protect their treasure ships that were mining and looting the new world from pirates and privateers. That contributed mightily to Spain's economic stagnation in the 17th and 18th centuries that further spurred its decline, creating the opening for Britain to step in and become a colonial super power.

If the Armada isn't destroyed, Spain and Portugal likely maintain their monopoly on colonization of the world far far longer.

So what would the world look like had Britain remained a second tier European nation and never led the commercial and industrial revolutions? Interesting question. Perhaps the Dutch, French, and Spanish would’ve continued domination.

That is a great point...had the British not colonized these places, someone else would have. How did colonies develop under British rule vs Spanish or Portuguese?

They sacrificed two generations of men trying to hold onto it and in the long run it cost them. If they would have let some of it go I think the UK would be a more powerful and less of a pushover that they have become.

Yes....

Grownups realize that unfortunately, the mortar for building civilization is made of blood and bones.....

Terrible things happened in every civilization that ever existed and we all benefit from those misdeeds...

To pretend otherwise is childish....

Considering that many of the nations once controlled by England are now much shittier than when England controlled them? Yes.

UK-US military/cultural/economic dominance is the reason the world is as advanced as it is. Once we stand down, the world is screwed.

In an ironic twist the Middle East is a war torn shitshow in large part due to the British and European powers making up countries with people who hate each other (sykes -picot agreement etc)

You mean after the already shitshow Ottoman Empire was doing just that with even more people who hated each other in an even more inefficient way and then collapsed, thereby forcing Western powers to step in and try to make some sense of it? Oh, yeah. Ironic just like a fly in your chardonnay, perhaps.
