I don't know if it was the healthcare system (which isn't as good as it should be) as much as the older population combined with densely populated cities with a heavy tourist draw.

The number one thing affecting the spread of this is certainly "larger gatherings." That concerts, religious events/funerals, factories with crowded work spaces etc have been the source of most traced high outbreaks along with the stark contrast between SF area / NYC where the main difference was how quickly SF limited large gatherings seems to bear this out.
However, there are a lot of "theories" about Italy in this thread that seem to completely ignore the fact that UK will likely end up much worse off.
As of today the UK has passed Italy in total Covid deaths (all while the UK has much more conservative counting methods) and UK cases are rising at over a 3:1 ratio to Italy.
Why is that the case?

Louisiana averages 48 ICU beds per 100,000 people
WE HAVE FOUR TIMES THE ICU BEDS PER CAPITA OF ITALY IN LITTLE OLE LOUISIANA

We are larger and are testing more than anywhere else in the world. We are also far better prepared than Italy when it comes to ICU bed count.

At first Italy seemed like an anomaly. Everyone had their reasons why Italy was struct particularly hard, But now the other big Euro countries have all joined in with them in France, Spain, and the UK. So i no longer knows anymore.
Meanwhile Germany is doing great. I dont get it honestly, theyre the country I want to study, not necessarily Sweden

Germany also has a really massive testing program. For whatever reason they've been able to roll out virus testing and antibodies testing at a much higher rate than pretty much anyone else.
I think Italy is getting a lot of attention because they were the first western country to start having high death rates. So all the news came out of there for a few weeks and people fixated on it. The reality is that just based on total cases it's much worse being in the NYC area than in Lombardy. Madrid was hit very badly too, and it seems like the UK is climbing steadily. Italy was noticed first though and things like "we're 2 weeks away from being Italy" are stuck in everyone's minds.

Please tell me about your health care experience in Italy. I know several people that have had to go to a hospital while traveling Italy. They said it looked and felt like 1940 America. Oh, and you better have a family member to take care of you while in the hospital.
