Driving through Athens, AL and an overwhelming sense of depression overcame me. Buildings are completely dilapidated and falling apart. You can see the 1970’s shopping centers where the heyday is long since past.

With a thriving metropolis just next door in Huntsville it’s just depressing to think that people are stuck in that life and unfortunately are too low IQ / poor to better themselves.

For the record there’s a difference between country living and living in a city such as Athens, AL. I mean hell if you are going to live in a city just move 20 minutes east and greatly improve your life. I am not addressing country living. Those folks are the salt of the Earth. The people I’m referencing are city slickers just in depressing small town southern USA.

It'll probably be easier if we just name the handful that aren't depressing

the people living in the small cities are generally not different than those living in the rural communities

There's some properties on the square that could use a good renovation, but that's about it.

If you think Athens is depressing, you should really explore more of North Alabama.

It's all over the country. Old school buildings with great character but all the factories moved to China in the last 40 years. You can thank your Republican and Democratic politicians that sold us out for cheap labor for their K-street pals. I tell you what movement would get ME into the streets. The forensic accounting of every politician over the last 40 years, complete investigation into money received and the corporations that paid them off. The family members that recieved jobs and professors that recieve "grants" from foreign countries. It's enough to make you puke !

I have a similar feeling when I'm anywhere near Mason Court, or Pulaski Pike, or Oakwood, or....well, many parts of Huntsville.
