Delta passengers fall ill while stuck on tarmac for hours in Las Vegas heat wave

A Delta Air Lines flight out of Las Vegas was canceled Monday after several passengers and at least one crew member fell ill amid "uncomfortable temperatures" on the plane as they waited for it to take off during an unrelenting heat wave, the airline said.
Multiple customers on Flight 555, which had been bound for Atlanta from Harry Reid International Airport, were seen by first responders, including a passenger and a flight attendant who had to be transported to a local hospital, Delta said.
“We apologize for the experience our customers had on flight 555," the airline said in a statement. "Delta teams are looking into the circumstances that led to uncomfortable temperatures inside the cabin and we appreciate the efforts of our people and first responders at Harry Reid International.”
The airline said customers were accommodated on other flights and received direct apologies and compensatory gestures.
Video shared online by a social media user claiming to be on the plane showed someone being wheeled away on a stretcher.
Krista Garvin, a field producer for Fox News who said she was on the flight, called it an "INSANE experience." She said a number of passengers passed out because of the heat.

Air travel is more expensive than it's ever been yet somehow the standard of treatment for passengers drops increasingly every year.

Something's gotta give with this. Why is protocol not to just get everyone off of the plane when shite goes wrong?

If Delta is having problems, all airline travel is screwed.

I hate it when they board the plane before the A/C is turned on. It's the absolute worst.

It’s why you always bring water bottle and a usb powered small fan especially in the summer onto the plane
So you don’t end up passing out and can attempt to cool off
I rarely travel in the summer because it’s so damn hot

Airline pilots of tOT, do airlines with extended holding times on the taxiways shut down their main engines and use only the APU for fuel/costs savings?

Yep. When they know an issue is going to take more than a few minutes, deplane everyone.

If you’re on an active taxiway you’re engines are definitely on.

I’ve never understood why aircraft don’t have better A/C systems

If you're in holding area, away from an active taxiway, that's pretty common. This plane was off the gate for almost an hour and a half before returning, and likely had an inoperative pack.
Likely a scenario where the crew was unaware of some kind of taxi delay or ground stop. Otherwise, I'd have to imagine they'd refuse the plane in those conditions.

Because the gate is already being filled with the next flight of passengers (my guess). But I agree it’s horrible when you have to get on a plane and just sit for an hour or more for whatever reason.
Air travel has gotten so shitty

Hey, all's good. We will just call it even.

If I'm on a plane and it's 100+ degrees and you refuse to turn on the air conditioning, I'm fighting everyone including the pilot.

That sounds miserable. I can’t imagine the heat

Happened to us on a return flight. We stayed at the end of a taxi way waiting to go to the terminal for a little over an hour waiting on a ground crew to guide us to the gate. It got miserably hot in the plane.

quote:I don't think it's just something they can "turn on". Pilots of the OT correct me if i'm wrong but the aircraft is on an external AC source when at the gate. Once it pulls away it has to be moving to take in cool air?
